The moon did not raise tonight
The very stars seemed to loose their light
No owls did any hooting
Or any foxes went a'midnight prowling
I know because I stayed up late
As sleep did my eyes evade
The wind did not play with the shutters
Nor did the crickets make any unitelligable chatter
No drunks came singing down the road
Or delinquent youth in their hourdes
Loneliness like a mighty bird of prey
Came in through the window pane
And after a brief glance at the bed covers
Came and perched on my shoulders
