Chapter Five
"Zach! Zach slow down! ZACH!" I grip onto the safety handle in my car.
"It's not my fault people drive slow." Zach -very violently- grips the wheel and speeds past another person. Horns blare and I have a feeling someone might have a bit of road rage.
one and a half hour earlier
"Is this blindfold really necessary?" I groan as I shift in my seat slightly.
"Yes, this place is a surprise and I can't have you peaking." Zach tries to reassure me but fails.
"I don't like surprises."
"I can tell."
"Are we at least almost there." I complain even more, probably annoying him.
"Like I said two minutes ago, no." He retorts back at me.
"But-"
"Zip! I don't want to hear anything from you until we're there." Zach makes a zippering noise and moves his hand in a slight motion. He probably regrets taking me.
"Fine." I pout as I cross my arms over my chest. I lean my head against the window and imagine the cars passing by in a blur. It all seems so peaceful. The way the trees blended into the blue sky. I almost fall asleep until the car comes to a halt. I jolt forward and grip onto what I presume to be the dashboard.
"We're here." Zach says excitingly. I hear his car door open ad shut in the matter of seconds. I count in my head how long it takes until he realizes that I'm still blindfolded. Soon, the passenger door opens and I feel a hand unbuckle my seat belt. It makes the sliding noise and clanks with the other metal piece. I then feel a hand wrap around my forearm and pull me out of the car.
"Let's go." Zach places a hand on my lower back and guides me through the unknown location. I trip on something but Zach makes sure I don't fall. "Ready?" He asks from behind me, placing his hands on my shoulders. I nod my head and feel him untie strap from the back.
What catches my eyes is the soft glow on the horizon.
"Where are we?" I ask, hearing the waves crash bring a new sense of peace I haven't felt in a while.
"Laguna Beach," Zach answers.
I take in the sight of all the palm trees, the blue water, the surfers, everything. Not many people are out at the beach today so it's somewhat quiet.
I must'e been so entranced by the beauty that I never noticed Zach had left me. He was approaching me once again but this time, he had a guitar and a blanket. He tossed me the blanket and I neatly laid it on the floor. We both sat down.
"Sing me something." Zach says, tuning his guitar.
"Like what?" I ask innocently.
"Anything, something that's been on your mind lately. Did deep into your emotions."
"Okay... uh, um." I take a deep breath and try to recite the lyrics I've been working on.
"So sue me for looking so pretty tonight. Wearing your favorite color under the lights. For moving on, doing everything right." I finish off.
"Dang, that was good. Is that all?"Zach asks as he stops strumming the cords.
"Yeah, I've been working on it since we got on the plane. But that's all I have so far."
"Mind if I add a few?" Zach positions the guitar again, ready to strum the cords again.
"Sure." I shrug my shoulders.
