"Let's go, Ruby, it's time to leave," My mothers' depressed voice rang throughout the hotel room.
"C'mon big sis, it's time to go," My brother held out his hand to help me up, and I gladly took it. I stood, my face blank my heart hollow.
Ever since she disappeared, I haven't felt anything. Not even upset at her disappearance. What am I, some kind of robot? I thought to myself numbly.
"Okay," I grabbed my suitcase and walked over to the door where Mom was waiting. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, and she had tear stains down her cheeks.
We left the hotel room, double checking for anything we may have left behind, then went down to the lobby. My brother and I headed out to the car while Mom checked us out, and sat in the heat; which actually sucked because the seats were leather.
"Y'know," Jake, my 14-year-old brother, started, "Mom gave you the keys so we wouldn't die of heat stroke."
I laughed slightly and started up the car, immediately turning on the A.C. We had trekked cross-country to Washington State to escape our hometown in Pennsylvania for the summer. Ever since she disappeared, it's been nonstop pity from our neighbors. We needed some time away, so we visited family here in Washington.
Mom got in the driver's seat of the car and pulled out of the parking lot, "Ready for a fresh start?"
My brother and I shared a look, then turned to our mother, "Guess so."

One Month Later
"Hon, wake up," I heard my moms' quiet voice, and her cold hand on my arm, "First day of school and you don't want to be late."
I groggily opened and eyes and blinked a few times, adjusting to the bright light my lamp was giving off.
School. Oh, joy. I wonder what everyone will think of the 'new and improved Ruby Wattson' now that she's gone.
"I'm getting up Mom, don't worry, I won't be late," I flashed my mom a bright smile before ushering her out so I could change.
I usually wore the typical 'nerdy' outfit as the popular kids would say. Although, it wasn't nerdy whatsoever. It was literally jeans, a t-shirt, and plain old sneakers every day; unless humanity gave me a reason to hope and I wore long sleeves.
Well, not anymore.
Ever since she disappeared, I would wear ripped jeans, boots, and a crop top or a see-through shirt. I had definitely changed, and I was actually eager to see if anyone noticed my drastic personality difference. That's the most emotion I've felt since the incident, so I guess that's good. My brother had noticed my new attitude, but Mom was completely oblivious. She had only ever asked about my new wardrobe once, and then I just told her I was trying something new. Well, it wasn't a lie, because I am trying something new.
"Ruby, breakfast is ready," Jake called from the kitchen, and I immediately ran out of my bedroom and plopped down into s chair at the table.
My brother may only be 14, but he's one hell of a cook.
Mom sat down beside me and smiled, "Just like old times."
"Yeah, I guess," I gave her a sad smile as we both glanced at the empty seat beside me.
She always sat there. Right next to me, every morning, without fail. Even when she was sick and hurting she would trudge down her to sit with us.
"Hon, we have to push through it," She places a hand on my shoulder, "No matter how hard it gets."

"Samantha, I heard Little Red is back in town," Is the first thing I hear when I enter the school's main building.
Little Red, short for Little Red Riding Hood. That's the nickname the school's queen bee, Samantha Evans, decided to give me.
"I'm gonna kill that little bitch," Samantha growled, slamming her locker shut.
"Actually, I'd prefer to stay alive, if you wouldn't mind," I narrowed my eyes at the blonde in front of me, a crowd forming.
"Ruby," She asked, shocked at my appearance, "Damn, just when I was beginning to think I should start treating you better."
Her two minions at her sides giggled, "I'd not mess with me anymore, Sam," I said, dangerously low, "I'm back... and I'm bitchy."
She smirked, "Whatever you say, Little Red Ri-"
I took a step forward and she took one back in sudden fear, me cutting her off, "And stop calling me that. My name is Ruby Scarlett Wattson, and if I was named after any iconic female character, it'd be Elsa."
"Oh really," She stuck her nose up, "Care to share why?"
"Because I'm cold,
I'm strong, I'm fierce,"
I paused, listing my reasons,
"And I'm the queen.""You Little bitch," She screeched as her hand flew towards my face, ready to slap me. I easily avoided it and decided it best not to get into a fight on the first day of school.
"You're wrong," I smirked as I walked away, "I'm the bitch."
I felt a pair of eyes on me as I closed my locker door, spinning on my heel ready to beat their ass.
"So," The guy in front of me started, "Ruby Scarlett Wattson, was it?"
I narrowed my eyes and nodded, not being able to shake the feeling that I knew him.
"Just one question," He said, but before he could finish, I put a hand up.
"No, I have a neutral opinion towards the color red. It ain't that bad, but it's not my favorite color," I rolled my eyes and went to walk away, then realized something, "Your name is Blake! Blake Jay Tylers; I knew I recognized you!"
"Good, does that mean you're gonna fall to your knees and kiss my boots," A cocky smirk made its way onto his face, but it was soon replaced with a frown.
I spun on my heel, smirking, "No way in hell. That means that you were friends with her."
"Who," He asked, dumbfounded by my sudden rejection.
"Ja-" my breath hitched in my throat, and I knew I was on the verge of tears. I bit my lip and mumbled, "Nobody," then walked off towards my class.
*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*
A/N so I'm liking Ruby, she reminds me of myself. Anywho, introducing Blake: the stronzo Ruby already wants to beat the living merda out of! (< Swearing in Italian there) It's short, but I managed an actual chapter instead of a 138-word long prologue!
