"Holy shite," Jack couldn't help but whisper when he finally reached the destination that the footsteps of the now dead bodies led to. A giant modern farmhouse loomed over him even from far away, complete with a towering electric fence surrounding the area.

Jack turned towards Mark who had oddly been right next to his side the entire time, either to keep Jack from freezing or for some other reason that he wasn't aware of. "Ready to see what's inside?" He asked, knowing full well Mark wouldn't answer. He then cautiously stepped towards the fence, confirming that it was off by lack of the On button glowing in warning, and tried the door to the fence.

It was locked, not that it mattered. Jack pulled out the keys and though they almost slipped out of his hands from their numbness, he managed to unlock the door and pushed it open. It was surprisingly thick and heavy, and hard to handle from the rusted metal scraping his hand.

Jack allowed Mark to enter first by motioning him inside with his stump, before shoving the door back closed once through as well. He heaved a huge sigh, rubbing his raw and sore skin, and looked over at the house. All was quiet, no shouts of alarmed residents or the firing of guns at the intruders.

Mark was sniffing the grass however and Jack paused, hoping Mark hadn't found anything dangerous. "What is it?" Jack whispered, and Mark squatted in response, making Jack jerk his head in the other direction. Of course... He felt slightly sick to his stomach, Mark truly was just like a pet, and he wasn't sure if he could change that.

Once Mark was finished, he took off like a speeding bullet through the grass and Jack suppressed the urge to smile. It wasn't a time for relaxing and playing. Jack turned behind him and locked the fence back up again, before cautiously making his way from the yard to the entrance of the farmhouse. He noticed large solar panels on the top and he wondered if the house would have electricity. Mark had finished frolicking and was back to Jack's side as he found the other key to the front door and entered as quietly as he could.

The house was dark and empty, until Jack tried the switch near him. The light flicked on just like any normal house before the apocalypse and Jack almost cried with relief. The living room had several comfy seats, a fireplace, and some board games, but the biggest attraction was the collection of guns that lined the walls.

Jack noticed the kitchen to the right from the living room and so he wandered in there, opening the working fridge and seeing piles of raw meat in aluminum foil or small baggies. He then tried the faucet which had a filter attached to it, and noticed from the window in front of him that there was a well outside. Fresh water came out and Jack desperately drank from it, groaning as it soothed his dry, sore throat.

How lucky Jack was to find people stupid enough to ditch their house together just to attack one person and a Feral. Jack chuckled softly, he hoped this wasn't also a curse in disguise like the rest of his 'luck'. At the same time... Everything that had happened to him, led him to this point. It led him to what he had been dreaming of for months, and despite the hardships, pain, and struggle, he felt it was all worth it in the end. He couldn't imagine what others had gone through.

The thought of having it easier than some others made him feel slightly guilty. There were people who were not able to live in working and functional houses; they weren't able to find their friends like Jack had; and some probably would have prayed for only a missing hand like him.

Mark whined, jumping against the fridge and Jack knew what he wanted. "Hungry?" Jack asked softly, opening the door and pulling out a packet of raw meat, checking to see if it had rotted any before tossing it to him. Mark snapped at it before walking off with it to eat in the corner. Jack couldn't help but shake his head at how dog-like, and also cat-like the man was.
