Going back to the window you stood in the middle of it, staring out into the darkening courtyard. Your hands were crossed across your stomach, feeling alone and uneasy in the room by yourself. The thoughts flickering through your head had you so distracted you didn't even notice that someone had joined you in the room.
Audrey...
You nearly jumped out of your skin, barely holding back from spinning around. Standing still you heard him moving softly into the room till he was next to you, so close you could feel the warmth radiating from his arm. Looking up at him you saw he was staring out the window, not even looking down at you.
"How did you know?" you asked, seeing the smile pull on the corner of his lips.
"Know what?" he questioned innocently, turning and catching your eye, making you raise an eyebrow.
"Come on Charles." You laughed, seeing his delighted grin at your laughter.
"It's a telepathy thing. My mutation recognizes the mutation in anyone else. More so apparently with another telepath." He frowned, turning fully towards you, "You're the first one I've met, besides the woman from the boat but she wasn't nearly as friendly."
"You're the first I've met for myself as well." You admitted, seeing the excitement radiate from his eyes, "I don't know if I'm going to fit in here though Charles."
"Don't think that way. You're a perfect fit. You and I, the things we can do with our mind..." he began, his voice quavering as he began to ramble but you shook your head.
"I don't use my telepathy. I spent my life honing my telekinetic skills because that's what protected me the most." You argued, hands still tucked under your arms.
"You don't need protection Audrey. Not anymore." He reassured you, putting his hands on your arms and making you look up at him.
Audrey this is your greatest gift. Touching minds and this beautiful mutation that you were born with.
It may seem that way to you because you have a hold on it Charles but I don't. If I even attempt to touch someone's mind I have to be careful so I don't destroy it. How is this my greatest gift?
It was the same for me. I can teach you. I can show you what a beautiful thing this can be but only if you let Audrey.
And if I can't?
You will. You're the only other person in the world I can share this with. Please let me help you.
Breathing deeply, you realized the telepathy was easy with Charles, more so then it was with Erik and you knew it was mostly Charles helping you already.
"I promise you won't regret it Audrey." He whispered, leaning down and catching your gaze, "Can you trust me?"
Those four words threw you back to the moment you met Shaw and the bile rose up your throat, choking you. Taking a step back you saw the confusion on his face at the sudden movement, seeing the mask of distrust fall over your features.
"What's wrong?" he asked, and you shook your head violently, "Audrey please, I'm sorry for pushing."
You knew he wasn't Shaw but it brought the memory up so clearly it was like you were back there, almost feeling the cool air on your legs, the threadbare dress giving no protection from the elements. The hurt on Charles face was almost painful to see so you forced yourself forward on jerky legs till you were back in front of him. Reaching out your hands you pressed your palms against his face, fingertips on his temples. Staring into his blue eyes he reached up, putting his hands over yours and holding you in place, no way to move. Letting him see what had just happened.
