With your girls in bed, you wandered into the room where Poe Dameron stood. He wiped his wet hands off on a towel and turned off the sink. Straightening up, his eyes flickered to your stomach.
"How far along are you?" he asked.
You touched your stomach. "I don't know," you answered, feeling a wave of anxiety. "But I felt the baby move... and my daughters can feel him or her in the Force."
"Huh." He nodded. He looked away.
"What?" you asked.
"Nothing," he said.
"No, what is it?"
"It's just... your husband left you here on this empty planet, in the middle of nowhere, with two young daughters," he said. "And you're pregnant."
Your face hardened. "He didn't know. All he did was to protect us."
"From what?" he asked.
"From-"
You cut yourself off. From what? The war? Snoke? Luke Skywalker?
You remembered what Luke had said years ago. He had said that you were the one. Did that mean you were in danger, and had been this whole time? Did Kylo just not tell you because he didn't want to scare you?
And Snoke. You never trusted him. He wanted you and your girls out of the picture. Was this his way of doing it? Making Kylo paranoid enough to send his family away, his "distraction", his only thing in the way of becoming a total puppet for the First Order-
"Nevermind," you choked, shaking your head free of the dark thoughts. "If you want to sleep, spare blankets are in the cabinet below the sink. You can make a bed on our floor."
Poe Dameron looked at you with dark brown eyes. "I need to find a way out of here."
Suddenly, a thought crossed your mind. You swallowed. "If you don't leave soon, will the Resistance come and find you?"
"I don't know," he admitted. His jaw set. "We have a new admiral calling the shots. My friend is on a separate mission, and he's honestly my only hope to get out of here." He ran a hand through his head full of dark curls.
"Oh," you said. A wave of guilt hit you. He was giving you Resistance information, and he had no idea you were Kylo Ren's wife.
It was true that you didn't support the Resistance, but this man was a reminder that there were humans there, too.
And you felt for them.
"Do you have a family?" you asked.
"No," he said with a smile. "I have a droid, though. I hope I make it back before he does. He worries about me, you know."
"That's sweet," you said, smiling back. "I'll help you find a way out of here starting tomorrow. For now, sleep here. We can scavenge for parts and salvage what we can from the wreck."
"Thank you," he said. You nodded and walked towards your room. "I... really, thank you."
"You're welcome."
...
In the morning, after a breakfast of mush and sugar and coffee, you ventured outside with the pilot. Your girls ran off ahead of you, playing in the sand and running around.
"Don't go where I can't see you, girls!" you called.
They giggled and scrambled up the side of a dune.
You and Poe walked to the wreck and shifted through charred rubble. He managed to pull out lengthy pieces of metal and toss them over his shoulder.
"Anything?" you asked, shoveling through some ash.
"Yeah," he said. He leaned back and wiped the back of his hand across his forehead. It left a streak of black. "I mean... it's something, at least. It'll take a lot of spare parts to rebuild this thing. A lot."
"I'll help," you promised.
He smiled at you and leaned into the wreck towards the inside. The seat was nearly gone, but the panels of switches had somewhat survive.
As he tossed a piece of board, a puff of black smoke burst out. You inhaled a lung-full of it and turned away, coughing violently.
"Oh, crap," he said. He stood up and rushed to your side. His hands hesitated before grabbing your arms. "I am so sorry. You're pregnant, you shouldn't be- you shouldn't be breathing this stuff in."
"I'm okay," you gasped. "I'm fine."
"Are you sure?"
He was worried about you. It was weird, having a man from the Resistance, someone who probably tried to kill your husband (and vice versa), be so kind and considerate.
If he found out who you were, he would kill you.
That voice again.
It wasn't yours.
Your head started to pound.
You stepped away from the pilot suddenly.
"I'm okay," you said. "I'll be fine. Let's just go scavenge."
You turned away, feeling the hot sun add to the pain behind your eyes.
What was that voice?
