John put down his phone and sighed. Sherlock was right. He had made that bloody agreement that allowed Hannah to meet Viola. But he didn't want her to be destined for the same dangers he faced. He didn't want Sherlock's daughter to put his daughter through the same pain Sherlock had put him through.
"Dad?" Hannah asked from across the breakfast table. "Who was texting you?"
Mary looked up from her newspaper as if to ask the question, too.
"Oh, umm, well," John stumbled, not wanting to expose Sherlock to Hannah just yet. "Umm, Mary? Can we speak alone for a bit? It's about...well."
Mary's eyes widened. She nodded.
As John and Mary got up from the table, Hannah looked concerned.
"It's alright," Mary assured her.
The couple walked into the bedroom and shut the door. Hannah could hear their muffled voices, something about a viola? Were they going to have her play one? That would be a strange subject to discuss privately. Anyway, her parents were always strange as if they had had some secret life before her. And for all she knew, they did. Hannah sighed and cleared her place at the table. She went into her bedroom to read.
"Viola? Now?" Mary asked.
"Yes. I'm really as surprised as you are, but we agreed. Hannah just turned sixteen and Viola turned sixteen a few years ago. We made this bloody agreement, Mary. We have to let her." John replied.
"It's just, Hannah is so sweet and she shouldn't have to face what we did." Mary said.
"I know, but a deal's a deal."
