Jason Todd's POV -
The silence in the room stirred something deep within me. I found that I could relate to what she was feeling. Except I was dead so I wasn't used to the silence or being alone. It was like I went to sleep for a night and then woke up.
But I did have to learn what the world was and what it had transformed into in my absence. That alone was enough to push everyone over the edge.
I blinked a few times trying to pull myself out of the dragging feeling of sinking down below. Jett stuffed his blade back into his boot. In all of his faults and failures, he was the quickest draw that I have ever seen in my life.
"I thought she was going to kill me." Jake said as he exhaled. That annoyed me. I know he didn't mean anything by it, but reflecting in his eyes, I seen the same fear that I was greeted with the moment I revealed myself to Bruce.
"I don't think she's violent. I just think she's dealing with a lot." I said as I walked from the kitchen back into the living room. I needed to get some air. For whatever reason, this whole situation was hitting a little too close to home for me.
"I need to go out." I said as I grabbed my jacket that I had draped over the back of a chair. They didn't say anything just watched me leave.
My head was buzzing. I felt guilty for a moment leaving those two alone with her. No matter how much I tried to deny that she wasn't violent, I didn't know that for certain.
Before my death, I would have never killed anyone. I would have never took the gun and I would have never pulled the trigger. I would have never took another human life just for the sake of it.
But after my death, when everything was much clearer, I seen what the advantages of taking a life was. I seen that by taking one life, you could spare hundred others.
Since I had left the manor, I had worked damn hard to create my own life. I had made sure that I distanced myself from Batman and everything that Batman stood for. I was the anti-Bat. I wanted nothing to do with him. I wanted nothing to do with any of the hero stuff.
But I found myself being a hero. And although, I tried to fight it and hide who I was, it just seemed to find me each and every time.
My thoughts went back to the place I found Agatha. She was taken care of, but I didn't know who would have taken care of her. I didn't even remember what lead us to that factory tucked in the back of no where.
Some nobody peddling drugs, I think. So, what did she play into it?
I had sent a sample of her DNA to Bruce. He was running her DNA and was going to watch her family for a while and give me a report. If I was being honest, I didn't want to believe that she was kidnapped and someone had just dropped her somewhere and left her to die.
I didn't want to believe that she was just suppose to be forgotten. The world wasn't that cruel. But it was and no one knew that better than me.
As if on cue, my cell rang and it was Bruce. I answered on the first ring, anticipation eating me alive.
"Jason." Bruce's deep voice was cold, but I didn't take it personally. He was always cold.
"Bruce." I returned the same tone. Not that we had problems, we said what we needed to say before I left, but I liked to keep us on a balanced level.
"She is Agatha Brown. DNA confirmed." He said straight to the point. Which is why I went to Bruce with this instead of an outside source. That and her family is from Gotham.
"Well, that's one mystery solved. What about her family? Do they know she's alive?" I asked wanting the answers to the mystery that's been plaguing me since I found her locked in the room.
"Actually, no. By GCPD reports, she was killed. Her body was found dumped by the docks by a construction worker. Her body was badly burned that it was hard to identify her. Her parents identified her. But it doesn't say how." Bruce and I must have thought that to be equally as odd.
Her parents just accepted the fact that her body was so burned beyond recognition? They just agreed that the body was their daughters?
What were they hiding? Did they do this?
"Was she ever considered kidnapped or even missing?" I asked almost in disbelief.
"No." He was very straight to the point, which lead me to believe there was more that he wasn't telling me. My whole body tensed up.
"What else?" I asked.
"Her dad, is a known thug working for the likes of Joker and Penguin. His latest gig was fighting off the good guys along side of Edward Nigma." That would explain quite a bit. So, the plot thickens.
The possibilities were running through my mind. Could her dad have sold her for money? Or for safety? The amount of bad guys running the streets of Gotham were over whelming. It could very well be the case, but my gut said different.
"I'm going to keep watching them and I'll send you over a complete report when I'm finished. Be careful with her. We don't have all the story." It was annoying the way he tried to take care of me and to baby me even with so much distance between us.
But he was right. We only have small bits of the story. I would really have to dig to be able to get the rest of the story.
"You're right, thanks Bruce. I appreciate your help on this." I said going to end the call. But the hesitation in Bruce's voice when he says my name calling my attention, stops me quick.
"One other thing, Alfred sends his best. He.. We all miss you." He said with such uncertainty I thought that I missed it. But it made me smile nonetheless.
"I know." I replied and though there was so much more than could have been said, we let the air between us die.
Then we said our good-byes and we hung up.
My mind was reeling with Bruce, Alfred, Agatha, Her family, her death.. everything.
Nothing was making sense to me. But I was going to get to the bottom of it once and for all.
