Character!
If I ask you how do you decide the character of a person, as in, is that person good or bad, helpful or not, etc, what will be your answer?
Well, if you ask me, I decide a person's character by how the person actually is, how is that person's behaviour.
Agreed?
Yes? No? Maybe?
But in India, a person's, to be more specific, a girl's character is decided by the clothes she wear. Do correct me if I am wrong!
We do hear many comments on girls like,
"Girls should not wear provocative clothes."
"Tight clothes and jeans cause rape."
"Good Indian girls cover up."
"She was a bit of a loose character anyway."
"Cellphones in the hands of women is what is causing trouble."
And its true. People actually think that a girl who wears short or tight dresses has a bad character. I mean seriously people!? We say India is free country now, then why are so much restrictions put upon the clothing of women. Why is it like if a woman wears short clothes, she is characterless but when a man does so, nobody says a word against it?
And we say there's equality in India.
I have heard many of the elders saying,
"The main reason behind many rapes is the over revealing clothes of women. They wear short and revealing clothes thus provoking men to take actions like rapes."
So, I asked few of my friends (male as well as female) about their views that what could be the possible reasons. I would like to list some of the reasons given by them.
The answers I got from girls were :
1) I think they want to show that men are powerful enough to reach that level of cruelty if a woman disobeys them. And this is really serious.
And for enjoyment as well, they can take such step.
2) There are quite possible reasons for the rape cases:
i) A man's lust.
ii) He might be going through some stress or depression. Sex is a stress relieving activity and call girls charge a lot. This might compel him to take an action like rape.
iii) Simply because it gives him pleasure, he may go for rapes.
3) We live in a male dominated society, and nowadays with changing times, this mentality of male dominated society is also changing. And may be just to prove their superiority, the men go for rapes.
The answers I got from boys were :
1) Its simply because of a man's lust.
2) Since our childhood, we are not allowed to have much contact with the opposite gender, not even as a friend. That might create a sexual tension and lead to rapes. Also to prove their superiority, men may take such action.
3) I think women are equally responsible for this. Because nowadays what I have seen, girls speak with the strangers freely. This may give them wrong signals. Also a man may make such step like rape just to prove that men are stronger than women.
So these were few of the answers I got from people. And to my surprise none of these people gave me the reason that its the short and over revealing clothes that women wear which attracts the men and forces them to take actions like rapes.
They why still some (or most of the) people think that its because of clothing?
Why are sill lot many restrictions put up on girls about the clothes they wear?
This is a very bad mentality guys. And this seriously needs to be changed. whatever might be the reasons for rapes, but blaming a woman for her short clothes won't really stop all this!
