Tragedy. That was the only word that popped into my head as I walked the empty streets. I remembered it all. Fire engulfing entire buildings. People screaming and trying to escape. And the bombs that helped create these ruins. It happened so fast… and somehow, I find myself back here. In the place where I had my best memories and also my worse ones. This was where I had a happy family, and amazing friends. Where I thought life couldn’t be any greater. But ever since that day, everything was taken away from me.
I remember the evacuation message on the TV screen. News about a nuclear attack that’ll demolish the entire state. My whole family rushed to pack our possessions and get out of the city as soon as possible. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones trying to reach safety. Cars overflowed the highways and as soon as we saw the missile drop, everyone got out of their vehicles and made a run for it, including us.
Everything else was a blur. I was separated from my family but was one of the lucky ones to jump off the bridge and into the water before the missile reached the ground. When I resurfaced, all I saw were flames. I didn't see anyone else. The people who jumped in with me probably all drowned. It was at least a two hundred foot drop. I survived... but now I'm alone.
I swam back to shore and headed west. My clothes were soaked and I was freezing but I all I wanted was to get as far away as I can. I followed the main road that I hoped would take me somewhere. I just kept on walking. No cars came. Nothing. No one. Then the rain started to pour. Hopefully it'll tame down the blazing fires in the city. I didn't want to look back.
An abandoned snack shack by the road was what I called my temporary home. I knew sooner or later I had to stop wandering aimlessly. Months passed. I ate and drank almost everything in the store. My supplies were running low. All I had left were a couple bags of chips and a bottle of water. I'm surprised I lasted this long without going insane. I haven't spoke to anyone and the only words I utter are the ones caused by my nightmares. I looked out the window. God knows how long I've been here. Somehow I didn't care. There was no longer importance to my life anyway.
My thoughts somehow drifted over to my mom. I couldn't help but think how she would react to this. She'd want me to go on and live my life, even if I was the last person on Earth. And so I made my decession. I'll go back to the city and say the goodbyes that I wasn't able to let out of my mouth for a long time.
And here I am now. Walking in a city of ashes and ruins. Darkness began to fall as the sun set. I immediately stopped as soon as I heard footsteps. I turned around and behind me were three individuals. I’m probably hallucinating. But as they got closer and closer to me, I realized that it was in fact reality.
When they were finally near enough for me to see their facial features, I noticed that two of them were girls and the third one was a boy. They were incredibly gorgeous for people who just survived a nuclear attack. All three were beautiful… too beautiful. Their skins were as pale as snow and their eyes were blood red. I took a few steps back, and saw grins on their faces. Did I just see fangs? I didn’t hesitate to find out. I ran as fast as I could.
I turned around for a split second and they were no where to be found. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me until I heard a voice behind me. “Foolish human,” one of them said, causing me to turn back around. “Did you really think you can outrun us?” All three of them were now in front of me. Their grins turned into smirks; once again revealing their fangs. “Looks like we found dinner,” the male one said.
Just as I closed my eyes to accept my death in the hands of what appeared to be vampires, I opened them to see a large wolf standing in between us. The beast let out a howl, and pretty soon other wolves surrounded the area. The three vampires hissed and then ran at lightning speed. Every single wolf, besides the one in front of me went after them. I stood completely still; hesitant to make any sudden movements. I merely watched as the beast turned into a man. His eyes met mine; causing me to gulp nervously for his next move. “You’re safe,” he assured me.
