"you want a what now?"

eleven smiled innocently up at hopper, her lips curving upward slightly at his exasperated tone, a hand running down the man's face.

"sleepover," el stated once more and she couldn't help but let her excitement seep through her voice, bouncing slightly against the creaky wood.

jim hopper sighed. out of all things she wanted this for her birthday? he thought the idea over for a second, nodding through the logistics when suddenly something brushed across his mind forcefully.

hops voice loud and stern with furrowed brows. "wait, wait! if you think i'm gonna let that wheeler kid spend the night here with you? then absolutely the hell not i don't want-"

"not mike!" el yelled over crossing her arms now annoyed. what if she had wanted mike to come over? it didn't seem like a bad idea anyway they'd probably do the same thing she's wanted to do anyways. seeing her fathers confusion she continued, this time her voice grew softer and guilty as he caught on.

"not mike dad...i wanted....i want max to do a sleepover here with us. like-like all the girls do on tv."

"huh. that spunky red head always hanging with that sinclair kid?"

el nods and sheepishly pulls on the end her hand me down flannel thinking back to that night. "i was mean to her," she frowns. "i want to-be friends better." is what she says, because even though after the snowball when she and max had made up and had decided on being friends things still weren't as solid as they could be.

"you really want this kid? i mean it's fine by me—i'll get you guys movies and buy pizza for the both of y'all."

out of all the things she had wanted for her birthday this was the most unexpected. jim had at least thought the girl would give him hell over mike for something but apparently not.

el nods growing giddy thinking of once more another new and relatively normal thing to do. after all, all the girls on tv had done this kind of thing lots of times it seemed.

she ends up asking max one day at lunch before all the boys had shown up. it had been just them and el had smiled shyly sitting next to her for a moment asking. "do you wanna sleepover with me at the cabin?" her voice was soft and the red head was shocked to say the least, having to have a minute to find her voice.

"i-um yeah! that'd be cool!"

max had never grinned so wide as the two beamed at each other quietly. she was happy that finally her and eleven would have a little while to bond and not just around the boys.

"hops getting pizza and movies."

"oh man we should watch halloween!" max exclaimed and even though el didn't know what that was she had nodded and grinned.

and now she found herself practically bouncing off the damn walls as hopper had said many times before, waiting for the red head.

she tries to watch some of her soaps but ultimately grows bored and ends up flipping through the snack pantry until the sound of grave being driven on reaches her ears. the girl arrives with a bag packed and of course a skateboard in hand, a small smile as well. it's nervous and she hopes eleven doesn't know just how anxious she was about coming over.
