All smiles, I know what it takes to fool this town. I'll do it 'til the sun goes down and all through the night time.

IT WAS ALMOST FRIGHTENING HOW FAST SCARLETT SINCLAIR MANAGED TO CHANGE HERSELF SO QUICKLY. Or, at least, on the surface. Everyone else had changed. It was her turn now.

During the first day of school, Scarlett was seen walking through the front doors as if she already belonged. The same girl who despised using even lipgloss now had red tainted lips that matched her hair. The same clumsy girl who trips on flats now wore two inch heels that clicked as she walked, and a leather jacket. They knew her as the new girl who drove a black Camaro to school. Next, they knew her as the girl who always hung around Barbara Campbell. Now, they knew her as Scarlett Sinclair, the girl nobody knew what to make of.

The middle of the year had come sooner than she thought, and the girl was no longer a stranger. It had taken her a while to adjust to the lifestyle that came with Barbara, considering since it meant being more socially active. Her entire wardrobe had changed as well, which meant so did her looks. She wasn't pretending. She was adapting.

She kept telling herself she's happy— and not pretending to be. In all honesty, it started to feel like the truth, especially when she saw how her other friends were doing.

Gert had turned into the school's activist, constantly being seen passing out flyers about her clubs. Nico barely spoke, dressed in all black, which made her stick out. Alex never spoke to anyone, and Scarlett could often see him by himself. Molly hadn't changed very much, which Scarlett was glad for. They shared the occasional nods and "Hi's" until their places dragged them away from each other.

Karolina seemed to be the only one of them who ever acted like everything was fine, greeting them whenever she saw any of them in the hallways. She became the church girl everyone knew.
