❝CHAPTER NINE ❞
❝ You're saying those words like you hate me now. Our house is burning your days in hell. There in the ashes, your soul cries out: don't be afraid of these thunderclouds.❞

WITH THE NEWFOUND POWER, Scarlett also found something inside of herself that she hasn't felt in a very long time. It was exciting, she had to admit, even with all of the unraveling of cloak and dagger around them. Somehow, the redhead managed to find some child-like thrill inside of her over the fact that she had superpowers. It was like living inside one of those comic books her brother used to always leave around their house, although she wasn't really a big fan of wearing spandex.
Still, like every story, there was a villain. In this one, there were several. The red haired teenager just happened to be living with one of them.
There was a text that she received from Alex at nearly twelve o'clock, saying to meet him so that they could figure everything out. That morning, Scarlett stood inside the kitchen of her home, leaning against the countertop with a cup of hot chocolate in her hand. She had just been reading the text over again, phone in hand, when Eliza suddenly walked in the room, and the teenager quickly stashed her phone into her jeans pocket.
"Good morning, darling." Scarlett's mother greeted her as she made her way towards the coffee pot and poured herself some in a mug. Her daughter's only reply was a nod and the same greeting before Eliza spoke again: "So, where did you sneak off to last night?"
Scarlett immediately froze, the brim of her cup of cocoa only inches away from her lips. Her brows furrowed as she looked up at Eliza. "How did you know I snuck out?" She asked. As far as she knew, her mother had been fast asleep.
Eliza's lips curled into a mischievous grin, one that looked unmistakably like her daughter's. "Scarlett, I've known you've been sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night since you were six years old, but somehow I don't think you were just sneaking off to your treehouse with Chase."
Sometimes it was hard to keep secrets from Eliza, it was almost eerie. Of course, that never stopped her. "That's some stalker stuff, you know that, right, mom?" She said, raising an eyebrow at her.
Eliza snorted and rolled her eyes at her daughter. "I'm your mother, it's my job to be concerned, dearest." She said simply, unfazed by it.
"It's nothing, I just went for a jog around the corner. The old gang and I aren't exactly on good terms, and seeing them again didn't exactly bring up good memories." Scarlett said. The best lies were based on the truth, after all, and it was true.
The Historian looked at her daughter for a moment, before she smiled sympathetically at her. "Darling, falling out amongst old friends isn't unheard of, especially with..." She trailed off, but Scarlett already knew what that silence meant. Amy's death. "But, you know what they say, the word broken often suggests that it can be fixed."
