The shouting is so loud now, I can't ignore it. My parents are throwing insults I can't begin to fathom. I hear things shattering, I hear the sound of my mother slapping my father.
It continues like this for days or weeks or months, I can't keep track. My sister Francine, only six years old, is terrified.
The fighting settles down for one day, but picks up again when my father comes home drunk. Now my mother is shouting something about the money, my father pushes her. I hear cracking and crying.
The sirens. They're coming back again to our house. Somebody takes me and my sister and my baby brother to our aunt's house. The house is clean and white, like a hospital. But it does the opposite of a hospital.
I see the pale corpse of my once living, happy baby brother lying on the ground. I don't know how it happened, but I hear the muffled sounds of someone saying he choked on his pacifier.
We put together a little funeral. Neither of my parents show up, it is only me, my sister, and my aunt. It is like this for a while, just us three.
One day, a big man with big muscles comes to my aunt's house. I remember my sister was playing with plastic building blocks, my aunt was drinking coffee, I was reading a book about giraffes or something. The big man brings us candy, but I don't take the bright, shiny, plastic covered sweets, nor does Francine. He says he needs to take us to the courthouse. We follow him into a car, so does my aunt.
We sit through a long and boring meeting, and a man who wore an ugly wig was in charge.
I sat with my aunt, but I saw my mother and my father. I don't remember anything about what happened, but I remember that they said something about 'divorce' and 'custody of the children.'
From that day, I never saw any of my parents again.
