Chapter 5

The last time Ali woke up in this bed she thought she was being auctioned off to be a sex slave and all her senses were throbbing.

This time, she was abnormally warm and felt like she couldn’t breathe.

Ali cracked an eye open and found the culprit to her uncomfortable state. The warmth came from the man lying beside her and the breathlessness came from his arm being draped across her chest.

Ali grunted as she tried to move the arm off of her body but only proceeded to make the arm grab and squeeze her closer to his body.

She was getting pretty upset even though her inner wolf was practically purring at being held so close by her ‘mate’. Ali scoffed, she said she wouldn’t ignore her wolf again but that doesn’t mean she has to agree with everything it has to say.

Ali sighed; there was no way she was going to get loose while this wolf beside her was still asleep. Apparently he was quite a bit of a cuddler, though he would never admit to it.

“Damien,” Ali started but only received a snort in return.

Ali blew out a breath to keep her cool, “Damien,” she said more forcefully and shoved him in the stomach. Ali found it sad that she ended up hurting her own hand by punching him in the side instead of waking him up.

Then an idea came to her mind, though Damien wouldn’t appreciate it, it seemed like the only way to get him to release her.

Ali took a deep breath and in the most terrified voice she could muster she yelled, “Vampires!”

That got Damien’s attention; he jumped up out of the bed, his gold eyes glowing in the dark as he scanned the room.

“Where?” he asked, his voice gravelly and had a growl to it; as if he was on the edge of his phase.

“I’m sorry, it was a false alarm,” Ali said and instantly regretted her ‘plan’ when those gold eyes turned on her.

She gulped and said, “Well, you wouldn’t let me go and that was the only way I could think to wake you up.”

Though he still looked angry, the gold dimmed from his eyes as he said, “That’s not something to play around with Ali.”

Ali looked down at the sheets and picked at imaginary fuzz, “I know, I’m sorry,” she apologized.

Damien walked back over to her and climbed on the bed. He reached out and placed his palm on her cheek, forcing her to look back up at him.

“How do you feel?” he asked.

Ali shrugged, “Better, I guess. How did you know I was attacking those kids?”

“Did you really think I was actually going to leave you alone after you left last week?” Damien asked. Ali gave him a confused look and he continued, “Ali, vampires – who we are on the edge of war with – know you are my mate. Did you really think I was going to let you out in the world alone knowing that?”

Ali looked away and shrugged but Damien brought her gaze back to him.

“No matter how it seems, or what you think, I care for you. You’re my mate and it’s my job to protect you first and loving you comes second,” he said with a smile.

Ali blinked, he seemed so sincere that she just wanted to throw herself in his arms and have him kiss her like he did before she left, but she didn’t. She didn’t because her logical side kicked in, telling her that she barely knew this man – mate or not.
