Chapter 9
Luke was as silent as he could be while sneaking on to the hostile territory. He was in his wolf form and although he had dark coloring in his human form, as a wolf he was a rare, white color.
Many might find a white wolf beautiful, but to his pack he was a nuisance. A white wolf had terrible camouflage in the forests. And in his culture, a white wolf was a clue to his conception; through rape. Apparently the wolf gods found it would be funny and ironic for every werewolf pup conceived through rape to be born into a wolf with such a pure color.
Luke remembered how he was treated as a child growing up. He was teased, ridiculed and most of all hated. Luke's father Alfred – if Luke should call him that – was envious of Alpha Liam, Damien’s father. He wanted everything the Alpha had but settled with having his wife for one night instead.
Of course, his ‘father’ was killed by Liam soon after he was found. And it was only a few weeks later when Georgina found out she was pregnant. It wasn’t until Luke was born and Liam smelled that Luke had a different scent than his, that they knew it was Alfred who had impregnated Georgina.
Luke shook his head as the depressing thoughts of his childhood, and entire life really, entered his head. He tried to concentrate on sneaking on to the Vampire King’s property. Fresh snow crunched beneath his paws as he slowly made his way towards the back gate.
On the subject of camouflage, one might think to just move up north, where it’s cold and there’s a lot of snow. Luke would, it’s just that mostly all cold, northern countries were vampires’ territory. It was because wolves preferred temperate climates and the cold didn’t bother vampires; also because for half of the year it’s eternal night. So when the treaty was being written and the land was being split, countries like Canada and Greenland were given to the vampires.
That’s where Luke was now, Quebec, Canada.
“Well, well, well, what do we have here? A little wolf who lost his way?” Luke heard a voice from behind him.
Luke turned around and saw three vampires staring at him as if he was lunch. But that was ridiculous, a werewolf’s blood didn’t taste very good to a vampire and it was toxic to the younger ones.
Luke growled as the three vamps closed in on him. “What do you say, Sammy? Should we take him to Leonardo or do we eat him?” one of the smaller and more scrawny vampires asked.
Luke could tell he was young; the younger ones didn’t have much muscle definition or strength yet. The vampirism was eating away their bodies; it wasn’t until their bodies gave out and died and they were reborn did they become the terrible creatures of the night.
“Matt, are you stupid?” the biggest one said; he was obviously the leader.
“You haven’t died yet. You drink Fido’s blood over there, you turn back human. Didn’t you read the vampire handbook?” Sammy said.
Luke cocked his head to the side; they had a vampire handbook?
Matt looked sheepish as he apologized for his idiocy. “Yohan, take Fido to King Leonardo,” Sammy said.
Luke growled and readied himself for an attack but Yohan didn’t advance towards him. Instead Yohan got a concentrated look on his face and soon Luke felt agonizing pain shooting throughout his body.
He had known that some vampires had special powers, but Luke always thought they were stupid and useless, like mind reading or talking to the dead. But this, this was something he wished he had never encountered.
When Luke was about to black out from the pain, he saw Matt standing over him, his eyes red from hunger.
“Are you sure I can’t eat him?” Matt asked.
