Jumping to a ledge that used to be a part of the stairs, Tracey followed Nesaliani through the rubble.
"This is the way I've always gone since the fire," Nesaliani proclaimed, pointing to a path that had no ashes.
It made Tracey feel stupid that Nesaliani, the strange dragon had a much better idea of how to survive then her.
They walked down the narrow dirt path and stopped.
This made Tracey worry because she thought she saw a very alarmed look on Nesaliani's face.
"The bush," Nesaliani commanded quietly, "hide."
Tracey did what she was told, she clambered behind the large bush and peered at Nesaliani through the thick leaves.
Tracey stayed silent in the suspense.
Both girls knew that the other was scared but, neither would go to comfort her.
There was something about the silence that made them both stay where they were. That they knew somehow they were protecting the other one. Some sort of connection between them, but what?
Nesaliani stared into the silence of the treetops. Suddenly, a flash of purple emerged from the shrubbery and the battle begun.
