I looked up out the huge gap in the ceiling above me and gazed at the millions of twinkling stars. You never could see such beautiful skies with all the New York lights, the power has long since gone out with no one left to keep it going. I stood up and walked over to the window climbing out, sitting on the ledge of the building with my gun beside me. I looked out over the remains of the city, I watched as dozens of biters roamed the empty streets. However something moving in the corner of my eye caught my attention, I grabbed onto a cement beam and leaned forward trying to see it.
It was too big to be a biter but it was definitely moving. As it inched closer I could make out the silhouette of a truck coming down the road. The truck slowed to a stop and Suddenly a beam of light was shone up at me. I stood up startled trying to keep my footing, I grabbed the top of the window seal and swung back into the room thudding to the ground. "Crap" I backed away from the window, I quickly checked to see that my gun was loaded and darted down the hall to the stairs. I jogged down the metal steps skipping the last few and heading out into the lobby of the once beautiful hotel.
I looked out the huge panes where the towering glass windows once stood. I walked from window to window until I finally could see the truck again, it was still in the same spot and I could now see people standing around it. They were shining flashlights at the building, I ducked behind a wall just as the beams passed over the gaps in the front of the building and into the lobby shining on chairs and rubble scattered across the dark red carpet. They were close enough that I could hear some of there conversation "should we go in" a women's voice asked "we don't know who's in there, or how many there are" a man replied a little to loud causing the others to shush him.
I backed up a little from behind the wall and started to creep towards the door. I was halfway to the door when I tripped over a piece of rubble that had fallen from the ceiling. I stumbled over it and tried to grab onto a chair causing it to fall. It made a loud thud that echoed through the building as it slammed against the ground. All the lights were now one me again "of course"! I said aloud before running out the lobby, I heard a gunshot behind me and instinctively ducked. "Woah what are you doing"? Someone yelled I'm guessing at whoever fired the gun. I heard them following me "I guess they decided to come in the building" I said speeding up, my heart pounding in my chest.
Before all of the chaos that struck our world I was on the track team and I guess all that running finally paid off. I ran all the way up to the top floor, my feet clanging on the metal steps. The steps of my pursuers still behind me but slowly falling behind, I got to the top and darted into the room where I was gazing at the stars earlier and ran to the window. Without hesitation I went to the window and climbed out onto the ledge, I slowly edged my way along it the wind whipping my hair around. I heard the people come into the room and there feet walking around the room as they searched it.
I looked back as a girl about my age looked out the window and over at me "oh my god" she yelled and I heard the others run towards the window. "She's insane" I heard one of them say and I laughed a little to myself. Maybe I am, I grabbed onto an exposed cable in the demolished wall and climbed up onto the roof as I have done many times. I sat up on the roof to catch my breath, "try following me up here" I murmured to myself as I walked around what little roof remained.
"Hello" I spun around to see a boy my age with short black hair standing behind me. I immediately pointed my gun at him and he put his hands up "woah we just wanna talk" he said taking a step forward. "Don't move" I said going to step back in return. "Wait" he called but it was too late, I lost my footing on the edge of a gap and slipped. I managed to grab onto the ledge but as I fell a piece of metal piping cut my side. I tried to pull myself up but the pain in my side was too much. "Are you okay" the boy said as he appeared over me, "grab my hand" he said holding out his hand.
"Come on"! He said when I didn't move, I hesitantly lifted my other hand but I couldn't get it high enough. My breathing became quick and shallow as I struggled to keep my hands on the ledge. I lifted my arm again and this time grabbed his. He pulled me up and I landed on my back, I wrapped my arm around my side and tried to stand. "Are you okay" he said as I fell back onto the ground. He bent down beside me looking at my side and took his jacket off, reaching forward. I pushed myself back wincing in pain "Hey I'm just trying to help" he said trying again. He reached forward and tied it around my side pulling it tightly and tying it off. He stood up and put his hand out, I ignored his offer for help and pushed myself up.
"How'd you get up here"? I asked looking at the edge and he laughed "same way you did" I looked at him then back at the edge. "Your buddies couldn't"? He shook his head no and this time I laughed a little to myself, despite the situation at hand. "Oh oh I'm Zach by the way" he said awkwardly and I started walking towards the edge "Cassy" I said simply as I looked over the edge to see three faces looking up at me. I stepped back "How many of you are there"? I turned back to face Zach. "Four including me" he said walking over to the edge as well "what's going on" a women's voice called up and he gave the "one minute" sign.
"We were looking for supplies when we saw you up on the roof, we weren't looking for trouble" he said and I laughed "neither did I" I gestures to the bloody cloth around my side. "Look they're really good people, why don't you come down there" I shook my head "Are we gonna pretend like one of you didn't try and shoot me, like you people didn't chase me up here" I crossed my arms. "That was Matthew, look he's not really good with strangers, we weren't trying to chase we just" he paused trying to find the right words to say "just come down there, I swear no one wants to hurt you" I looked over "am I actually going to consider going down there" I said to myself.
"If we wanted you dead... you'd be dead" he said trying to persuade me. "Now it just sounds like your threatening me" "no no, I'm not, I... look I saved you, that has to count for something right"? I sighed. I grabbed my gun and put it in my belt "you first" I gestured for him to go. I must really be insane, He walked over to the edge and threw his leg over "can you make it down"? He glanced at my side "don't worry about me" I said and he nodded. He started to climb down and I looked over the side, "I swear you better be telling the truth" I whispered as I started my climb down the building.
Zach was inside a couple minutes before me because of my side, "Cassy, you good"? Zach called up when I stopped for a minute. "Yeah" I mumbled breathing heavily, I continued down until I got to the window where all four people were staring at me. I climbed in nearly falling to avoid running into them "Uh Guys this is Cassy" Zach walked over to where I was "Cassy this is Emily" he said pointing to a girl in her twenties with blonde curls in front of me. "Carly" he pointed to a red head girl a little younger than me, "And Matthew" he pointed to a man around his twenties as well with dark brown hair. "Aww the Matthew who tried to shoot me" I crossed my arms and glared at him, he returned that glare "yeah he didn't mean to like actually shoot you" Emily said giving an awkward laugh.
"I'm sure" I looked around the room at all the people, this is the more people than I've seen in at least three weeks. "You live here"? Emily said looking around at the room around us "for a while" I said and she gave me a puzzled look. "I don't stay in one place long" I explained and she nodded "yeah we've been looking for a more permanent shelter" she looked at the others giving a smile. "Honestly I don't think there is anywhere like that anymore, it's either demolished, overrun by biters, or someone will come along to take it" I looked up at the stars through the ceiling.
"Well you don't sound very hopeful" Zach said and I glared at him "it's not that I don't have hope, it's just nothing I have seen, no one I have seen has proved me wrong yet". I looked back at them "what about us, I mean we're not that bad" Carly chimed in for the first time. I laughed a little "yeah but" I looked at my bleeding side that had now soaked through the jacket wrapped around my waist. "Still didn't turn out to well" I continued, "Look maybe, I mean do you have a group"? Zach asked and Matthew stepped forward for the first time "no"! He said sternly.
"What do you mean no"? Zach started to say but Matthew cut him off. "We don't know her, there is no way we're just going to let her join us" this time I chimed in. "Excuse me, for one who said I wanted to join you people, and two your in my camp you came here and tried to shoot me" I paused waiting for him to retaliate but they all remained silent. "You shouldn't be on your own" Emily quietly said. "It's worked up until now" I paused "when you trust people they betray you, when you care about people they die, when your alone you don't have to deal with any of that" I said looking out the window when I felt a tear slip down my cheek.
I turned back to face them "I'm fine on my own" I said looking at Zach. He went to argue but Emily stopped him "Look Cassy we're leaving the city tomorrow morning, we'll be outside the courthouse if you change your mind" she gave me a sympathetic look. "I think we should go if we're going to leave by tomorrow" she continued before heading to the door. I followed them down to the bottom floor lobby and watched as they got into they're truck "just think about it" Zach said before he walked out. I watched as they drove off, the noise causing the biters to be drawn to them.
I quickly walked back into the building to avoid the biters and sat in the lobby "what the heck have I gotten myself into" I sighed looking at the cloth tied around my side, one thing was sure, I had a lot to think about....
