Chapter seven

~~Zach's Pov
Cassy was acting extremely odd, even more than usual, she was mumbling and talking about seeing something. Suddenly she dropped almost as if her legs gave out, I bent down beside her fear building when she laid still on the cold ground "Cassy"? I said shaking her "Cassy"! I said a little louder. "We need to get her out of the road" Emily said looking down each side as if a car would suddenly appear. "May we have some medical supplies in the back of the RV, I need you to get them" she continued. May nodded running off "Matthew help me here" I looked over at him grabbing Cassy's arms. Matthew helped me lift her off the ground, we slowly and carefully carried her over to the RV since it was closer then the building.
       May was inside gathering the supplies when we came in, Matthew and I sat her onto the small white table on the side of the RV. "I took a first aid class when I started babysitting" May said pushing past us with the medical supplies. She untied the jacket, my jacket, that was still wrapped around her waist from the first time we met. It felt like centuries rather than days since we were standing on that demolished rooftop in the city. May cut her shirt up to her stomach so she could see the wound, I had to look away at the sight of it. It looked like something from a horror movie, it was a dark black and green color.
Obviously something was wrong, "it's infected, like bad" May said grabbing a water bottle from the counter. She poured it on her side, dabbing it with a sterile cloth "Cassy"? She said getting nothing but silence in return. "It needs stitches" she continued searching through the bag. She couldn't find anything, "Uh a sewing kit, do we have a sewing kit" she asked and I went fumbling through the supplies. I found a small sewing kit in a red case and quickly brought it to her "is that safe" Carly said looking at the needle in May's hands. "Safe. No, but it's the best we got right now" she carefully and calmer than I've ever seen her, threaded the needle.
"I can't watch this, I'm sorry" Carly said leaving the RV. "Yeah actually maybe y'all should give me some space" May glanced up over her shoulder at us waiting for us to leave. Nodding Emily and Matthew walked off, I took one last glance at Cassy, took a deep breath, and walked out of the RV. It was still night so the only light May had was a flashlight, as we were left in the dark; the moons dim light guiding us as we walked around the RV. "God things we're almost okay again" Carly said putting her head in her hands "that's the problem" Cody said for the first time all night.
"What" I snapped at him "things are never going to be "okay" again" he continued staring at the skies. "We live in a decaying planet where we can't trust anyone or anything to be safe" "nothing will ever be safe or okay, stuff like this will always happen; we will have to fight everyday of our lives" he finished not looking away from the stars once. "We made a choice to leave, that was a mistake, we came back and things are still not okay" he said looking at us now. We all stared at Cody blank faces absorbing all that he said, "We just have to have hope, we're gonna find somewhere safe" Emily encouraged us. However she just sounded like she was trying to convince herself of that, none of us could argue with what Cody said. No matter how much we hoped we all know that nothing will ever be as it was; the world we knew, the people we knew are gone. "It's not about the past" I spoke up, "What"? Matthew looked at me confusion on his face as well as the others. "Things are never going to be as it was, but so what" I continued "we found each other, we survived the bombs, we survived the people, we survived the biters and were still here" "this is our life now, this is our world and we are going to brave it together" I continued. When I stopped I heard clapping behind us, Carly, who was facing me, gasped. "Cassy"! She ran past me and I turned around "nice speech" she smiled at me and I couldn't help but return it.
"I think it was just an episode, caused by the infection" May said an arm on Cassy's shoulder. "An episode, that means it'll happen again"? Matthew asked walking forward as well "we'll cross that bridge when we get there" Cassy shrugged "for now I'm fine, so let's focus on our next move" she continued.
~~~ Cassy's Pov
After I said that Emily stepped in front of us all "well we know we can't stay here" she stated "since I don't think any of us our going back to sleep maybe we should go ahead and find our next destination" she continued holding up the map. "Matthew, Cody, May, and I will grab the stuff from the roof; Cassy, Emily, and Carly y'all start planning our next move" Zach said as he sent me one last look, with that they all jogged over to the building. "Let's go" Emily encouraged as we hopped into the RV, "so I was thinking we could go to this hotel" in the next town over" she said laying out the map. Carly and I held the sides down so it wouldn't role up, "how far is it"? I asked scanning the map for the hotel she was talking about.
Emily grabbed a marker from a drawer and circled a place on the map. "I went there every year when we visited family" she continued "its large and should have plenty of supplies if they haven't already been scavenged" she added with a slight smile. "It's about a fourteen hour drive though" she shrugged unsure of whether the chance is worth it. I grabbed the marker and drew several large circles "these are the areas that were bombed, the hotel is in between two dead zones so it may still be in pretty good shape" I said stepping in front of the map. Emily and Carly stared at me blank faced "the what"? Carly finally asked looking at my markings on the map. "Dead zones, the areas that were bombed, they're usually filled with the most biters; the city luckily was evacuated for the most part so their wasn't as many biters" I explained, I ran a hand through my short hair "these areas are going to be like nothing you have ever seen, demolished, and full of hundreds of biters in every street. In every building, we're going to have to drive straight through one to get to that hotel" I continued feeling the gravity of the situation beginning to push down on us.
The others walked in and I explained it all to them "I know" Cody said once I finished. "May and I were staying just outside a dead zone and even then we were swarmed with biters" he explained looking hurt. That's when it dawned on me, they left to find his brother "is that why you didn't find your- your brother"? I asked and he nodded. "I'm sorry Cody" I apologized, all this time I could only see the fact they had left. My pain clouded my vision and I never thought that they've been through just as much as I have in the month they've been gone.
All of them have been living in this deranged reality of ours, but mine's the only one that's been told; I can't be the only one who's lost people, who's been betrayed by people. "You know what" Matthew said twirling a knife around his fingers "let's do it" he stabbed the knife into the table. "You really think this will work"? May asked hesitantly, sounding completely unsure if this was the right move. "Nope, that's why we do it" Mathew continued "this is really bad" Zach remained on the fence with this one. "I got to say I'm with Matthew" Emily shrugged "what's the point of just surviving, we have to live, we have to take these chances" she said as her and Matthew locked eyes, she nodded sending him a reassuring smile.
       "We did it once lets do it again" Cody stepped forward standing by Matthew and Emily. "Cassy"? Carly asked looking at me for my opinion "sorry.. I'm with them" I said to Zach apologetically "you got to be kidding me" he said shaking his head, frustratedly running his fingers through his hair. "Yeah I don't know" May said looking dead at me "We were out there, we saw how bad it was" she continued "look Emily's right, we can't just live in this world, we survived two years in this world of the dead" "we have to take a chance" I finished.
        I don't know why but now more than ever after all I've been through.. all we've been through, I'm don't being scared. "I thought it was "your ultimate job" or whatever to protect everyone" Zach exclaimed causing the others to send him and me puzzled looks. "This is gonna get someone killed, are y'all really going to risk losing someone" he continued turning around and storming out the RV. I heard the truck's door slam, "What was he talking about"? Emily asked me looking nervous "nothing" I shrugged. "Are we doing this" I asked looking at the others waiting for an answer, we're going to drive through the dead zone. We're going to make it to the hotel... all of us, we have to. "Well then.. let's do this" Emily said picking up the map and shoving it in her bag, "Cody, May, Matthew y'all got the truck with Zach, Carly, Cassy, and I got the RV" she finished and with that we set out to yet another journey into the uncertain land ahead of us.
       I looked out the window as we drove, passing what for that split second looked like Bex standing on the side of the road. I did a double take shocked only to find the road and field around us barren and empty of life. "Not this, she's Gone" I told myself closing my eyes.
