Lone survivor {completed}

Chapter two

I sat there for what felt like hours without moving. I stared at the rubble laying around me, "this building is demolished, this city is in ruin" I said to myself as I stood up. I paced back and forth "it's overrun with biters, I'm low on supplies" I continued running my hands through my long hair in frustration. "Maybe I should go"? I kicked the chair I had knocked down earlier in frustration "I can't, there is no way I can" I told myself over and over again. And yet I walked upstairs for the third time today and went to where my bag was. I filled it with food, water, and any medical supplies I had along with ammo and some knifes.
I slipped my gun into my pocket and grabbed a knife I had found in a cupboard and headed towards the doors of the building. "I hope I'm making the right choice" I said before walking out. I walked along side the buildings trying to avoid the biters, the sun now rising above the horizon and into the sky. For the most part it was an easy trip, only a few biters actually saw me. I took care of them and continued hoping I wasn't too late, I walked to the side of the courthouse and inched my way along the cement wall. I turned the corner to see the truck and an RV parked outside, I saw the others packing up supplies into the back of the truck.
"This was a mistake, I shouldn't of come" I said about to turn back and leave immediately regretting coming, "Cassy" a voice called out making me stop with my back to them. I slowly turned around to see Zach and the others running towards me, everyone except Matthew. They stopped a few feet in front of me and I looked behind me "I was just, uh" I shook my head "leaving" I continued turning around again. "Wait" Carly grabbed my arm "your not actually leaving" I pulled my arm away "I shouldn't of come okay" I snapped, mad at myself for being so stupid.
"You came here for a reason" Zach protested and I stopped "right"? He asked when I remained silent. "Come with us" Emily urged, "Why do you want me to come so bad you don't even know me"? I asked no one in particular "none of us knew each other before" Carly said "none of us would probably even be here still if we didn't find each other" she continued, walking around to stand in front of me. "We can add one more member to the group" Zach said backing her up and I looked over at Matthew "I don't think he wants me to come" I gestured towards Matthew who was glaring at us.
"You two have more in common then you know" Emily looked from him to me "you both are stubborn, and both have trust issues" she continued I went to protest but knew it was true. "He'll come around" she assured me and I laughed "I think I've lost my mind" I said twirling my hair I had pulled back into a pony tail. "So your coming"! Carly exclaimed and I nodded, before I could react she ran over and hugged me. I winced when she wrapped her arms around me and she backed up "sorry caught up in the moment" she smiled at me and I returned it.
I walked over to where Matthew was with the others "we got one more person tagging along" Zach said smiling at me. Matthew looked at me and sighed "don't get us killed" he said hopping in the truck. "Well okay then" I said, Emily laughed before patting me on the back "done let him get ya down". I'm going to drive the RV, Zach and Matthew are gonna take the truck" she said looking at everyone "well let's go" she ordered and we all got into the cars. Carly and I got into the RV with Emily, we waited for Matthew and Zach to pull out in the truck and we followed them. "So Cassy tell me bout you" Carly said once we were on the road "what's there to tell"? I said watching the trees pass "like who made you so untrusting"? I turned my attention to her "Carly"! Emily said sternly reminding me of a mom. "Just wondering" she said "okay fine, what do you like to do" she quickly changed the subject.
"Uh I draw" I said not wanting to talk about myself "what about you, tell me something about you" I said turning the conversation to her. "Um well I'm an only child, I grew up in Virginia and moved up to New York a couple years before the disease hit" she continued to talk about herself but I sort of zoned out.
I stood on the edge of the sand with the cold salt water splashing up on my feet. Suddenly I was shoved forward into the freezing water, I jumped up and spun around to see Bex my best friend standing behind me laughing. "I'm going to kill you" I laughed brushing the wet hair out my face. I chased her all the way up to the wash houses, I looked up at the sign above that said Virginia Beach. I smiled, ever since Bex moved down here I don't get to see her as much so I loved spending the weekend with her. "Cassy" she called mockingly "Cassy" she said again this time in a whisper I turned to see Bex standing there. Her flesh rotting and staring at me with the full eyes of a biter "Cassy" she said again "Cassy" she screamed and I closed my eyes.
"Cassy" I opened my eyes to see Carly standing over me looking worried "Are you okay you totally blanked out for like ten minutes" she exclaimed and I saw we were now stopped. "Oh sorry yeah I'm fine" I stood up "Uh what are we doing"? I asked and Emily walked towards the door of the RV "supply run" she said opening the door "we'll be there in a sec" she called out to the boys. "Are you sure your okay" she said putting a hand on my shoulder "I'm fine" I laughed it up walking out of the RV. I wiped a tear that had escaped my eyes off my cheek and walked over to the guys.
We were outside of a supermarket on the outskirts of the city "what's the plan" I walked up beside them with Emily and Carly close behind. "Carly and Emily are on good duty, I'm on living supplies like gas and blankets, and Matthew you and Cassy are on medical" Zach said smiling wickedly "why me and her" Matthew complained pointing at me. "Wow thanks" I rolled my eyes "y'all can get to know each other" Carly said peppily as her and Emily walked past us and into the store taking their guns out. "Watch for biters" Zach said before jogging off and heading into the store as well, "just don't slow me down" Matthew said before storming off towards the sliding doors, I followed him trying to not say anything sarcastic to him.
We walked in silence until we got to the medicine section "I'll find what we need just stay put and don't die" he said like I was a child. I couldn't take it anymore I snapped "what's your problem"? I asked crossing my arms "what"he snapped back. "Why do you hate me so much, what did I do" I said trying to keep my voice down. "We have something good going on here, we don't need some random chick screwing it all up" he said not even looking at me "see that right there, I don't understand you automatically think I'm going to mess everything up you don't even know me" I argued "excactly" he said turning and walking away.
"Whatever" I said under my breath walking down the aisle, I grabbed anything that looked like it would be helpful. I was about to grab some bandages when I heard a scream pierce the silent air. I ran to the other side of the medical area to see a biter on top of Matthew, I grabbed my knife and ran over stabbing it in the head. It fell to the ground but another biter grabbed me, I spun around and stabbed it. It fell and when I'd did I saw Zach, Emily, and Carly standing there. "Are you guys okay" they ran over to me and Matthew who was just now getting off the ground.
"Fine" he said looking at me "Just Stay put and don't die huh" I picked up his gun and tossed it to him. He caught it and everyone looked from me to him "so you guys find anything good"? I asked the others after about a minute of silence. "Uh yeah we left it when we heard the scream" Emily said "yeah same" Zach agreed. "Well what're we waiting for, let's keep looking" I said picking up the basket I was putting medicine into. "Okay sure, are you sure you guys are all right"? Emily asked one more time seeming unconvinced, "yes" Matthew and I said in unison.
      "All right" she said before hesitantly walking off down the aisles Carly shortly in tow, Zach went off in the opposite direction looking back at us once before disappearing into the store. I looked over at Matthew and then without a word went back to grabbing supplies off the shelves. Matthew just stood there staring at the biters on the floor "Hey Cassy"? He asked "yeah" I said not looking at him. "You know Uh thanks or whatever" he said starting to scavenge the shelves now too. I laughed and turned around now to face him "your welcome... or whatever" to my surprise even Matthew smiled a little.
       After about an hour of getting supplies we all met up back at the cars to load up our supplies. "I see y'all didn't kill each other after all" Zach said as we emerged from the store "yeah surprising right"? I said throwing the stuff  in the storage compartment of the RV. "So I'm thinking we travel north down the highway for a few more hours, we can stop somewhere up there and camp for the night" Emily said tracing our path on a map. "Let's do this" Zach said jumping into the truck, we all followed his lead and started to pile in to the cars.
"Where exactly are we going"? I asked Emily walking up to where she was. "Honestly this all just felt like one huge road trip, for a minute just a minute it didn't feel like the world was the decaying, destroyed, evil place it is now" Carly laughed but Emily ignored her. "We believe there is a safe zone there" she said handing me the map, "one the government set up for evacuees, if it's still standing that's where we're going.. that right there is our safe place like I said before" she said smiling widely. That's one thing I'll never understand, how? How? Is she so hopeful and convinced this place is the one. That this place will be safe, that we'll be safe there, I guess that's something she has that I don't. Is it hope or ignorance I honestly can't tell, but whatever it is is the reason I'm here right now. Trust me I never thought in a million years I would leave that city, let alone with a group of strangers.
"Cassy you good"? Carly asked suddenly now beside me, bringing me back from my thoughts. "Yeah just thinking" I said giving her a reassuring smile "not having second thoughts about joining us" Emily laughed "not yet" I smiled. A genuine smile, can't remember how long it's been since I've done that. After a while the RV slowed down before stopping in the middle of the road "what's wrong"? Carly asked as we both stammered up to the front. " not sure" she said uneasily standing up and walking to the door, the boys were just now getting out of the truck "why'd we stop"? She called up to them.
Zach jogged up to us "were blocked by some cars" he explained "me and Matt are gonna Hotwire em' and get em' out of here" he continued and I jumped out the RV. "I can help" he looked at me for a minute "you can Hotwire a car"? He asked "yeah, my.." I stopped "someone taught me" I quickly finished. Luckily for me no one questioned my hesitation and Zach nodded, Matthew, Zach, and I all went to work moving the cars. Honestly just being alone for a minute was great, "my someone taught me" I mocked myself "god you have to just forget about them" I said as I got the car to start up, I started to pull off when I heard a gunshot.
I slammed on the breaks and got out ducking behind the still cars around us. I looked out from the side to see Carly, Matthew, and Emily standing by the RV two people aiming guns at them. Suddenly someone grabbed me from behind and put a hand over my mouth, I slammed my elbow into their stomach and turned around seeing Zach kneeled over. "Zach"? I asked and he put a finger to his lips shushing me, "those people came out of no where, I think they set the cars here" he continued as we both glanced their way "only two"? I asked and he nodded.
"We need to do something" Zach said creeping up beside me now, "if we go around the back of the truck we can get to them without being seen" I said taking out my gun. Without another word we wove through the dozens of cars, we finally reached the truck and ducked behind it "one... two.... three" Zach mouthed and we jumped out. "Put your guns down" I yelled as me and Zach walked over keeping our guns raised. The two people turned around and my heart stopped, there in front of me stood two very familiar faces of the people I once trusted.... there stood my older sister and my once close friend. "Cassy"? She asked holding my backpack from the RV with my name scrawled on it, and suddenly all eyes were on me...
