"May"? I gasped nearly dropping the gun, there around the girls neck was my sisters locket. I held my own in my clutched fist "where'd you get that"? I yelled shoving the gun in her direction. "Cassy calm down" Carly said holding the still crying Gracie. "Where did you get that"? I asked sternly again, "she asked you a question" Cody chimed in now at my side. "Woah lets all calm down" the girl said as she slowly stood up. "This girl gave it to me" she started to say cautiously "I ran into her not far from here" she continued. I lowered the gun now standing silent waiting for her to finish.
"Bullcrap" Cody shook his head in disbelief "nah its true" she quickly added "look she was swarmed by biters so I tried to help her, when we got out I realized she was bit" she paused taking the necklace off "she told me that she had some friends around here, she told me to give them this" she held it up. "What happened to her"? I asked quietly, the girl glanced at the others then back to me "she asked me to leave her my gun, so I did, that's why I was running from them guys I don't have a weapon" she finally finished showing her hands to show she was unarmed.
"You don't really believe that crap do you"? Cody asked laughing sarcastically "probably killed her and stole the necklace" he growled. "I don't think she did" I said looking at him sadly "you know May, tell me that doesn't sound like something she would do" I took a step towards him. He just stepped back "no, it doesn't" he stormed off, "what's your name"? Emily asked the girl, she had black hair with half her head shaved. Her green eyes met mine before looking at Emily "Tyler" she replied as she lowered her hands to her sides. "Do you have a group"? She continued to ask, Tyler just looked at the body behind her "believe it or not that was my group" she pointed in his general direction.
"At one point anyway" she sighed, "what changed" Matthew asked doubtfully. "What do you mean" she replied defensively "I mean y'all were a group at one point, there's a reason why your not, what is it"? He spit back getting frustrated like always. "What does it matter"? She was getting just as angry, I glanced over at the others who were still standing there shellshocked. "I ain't trusting some random chick who just shows up without knowing who the hell you are" he growled glancing at me. I sent him a reassuring look "things change, people change, the only difference it makes it what you did to get there" I told her in a monotone voice as I looked at the others. I went from angry to hurt to now just... numb. Honestly I didn't care about this girl and her story, I just wanted to get out of this stupid city. Yet Matthew is right, and I will support him... no matter what.
"They killed someone, someone I cared about. So I retaliated, there happy" she yelled. Just as she stood a gunshot fired hitting the wall beside her head "get down" Emily directed, we all dropped to the ground. I looked around but couldn't find any sign of the source, "I'm going to find where it's coming from" I called to the others just as another shot was fired. "Cassy no" Carly tried to stop me, she still had Gracie in her arms so there wasn't much she could do. I stood slightly and rushed to the edge of the roof, ducking behind it. I waited a couple seconds before glancing over the edge, just as I did a bullet was fired barely missing my head. "Crap" I ducked once again breathing hard. My heart was pounding out my chest, but then my eyes met the others and I remembered what exactly I was fighting for. I looked over again, scanning the ground. Nothing.
"The building" Zach called to me pointing at the towering grey building beside us, glass shattered out the windows. Yet in one window I could see someone shooting, then another, the another "there's a lot of them" I called back. Trying to count, another bullet struck right beside me, "we need to get off this roof"! Emily yelled above the gunfire. "On three" Matthew said looking dead at me, I nodded knowing what he meant "one" he yelled, my heart was beating a mile a minute "two"  he continued, everything started to move slowly. "Three" we finished together as we both stood up. "Go" Matthew yelled to the others as me and him began shooting at the people.
They returned our efforts firing back, bullets soared past me and Matthew but we stood out ground. The others ran to the door firing a shot every now and then to help. Once they were safe I ducked down "Matthew get down" I yelled but he refused to stop shooting. "Matthew" I started to stand as a bullet flew past me, grazing my shoulder. I pulled back holding my shoulder in pain, I looked up just in time to see Matthew drop. The bullet missed me... but not him. I rushed over staying low, "no" I gasped tears already flowing. Matthew suddenly started wheezing, gasping for breath, relief flooded me right before the shock set in. "Matthew we have to get off this roof" I told him as I looked to see where the bullet had hit.
He just shook his head turning slightly, he winced in pain, and I saw his bleeding leg. "God" I ran a hand through my hair, "okay, it's going to be fine" I looked around and saw a tattered sheet still left where we had slept. I quickly grabbed it, tearing off a strip and lacing it around Matthews leg "no going to lie this is gonna hurt" I said just before pulling it tight. "Crap"! He yelled pushing me away and grabbing his leg. "We don't have time we need to go" I wasted no time to be back at his side. Quickly putting his arm over my shoulders supporting his weight I pushed us up. Bullets shot beside us forcing us back down, "just go" Matthew groaned holding his leg.
"What"? I turned my attention to him in disbelief "at least one of us should make it out of here" he continued duly. "If you think for one second I would leave you behind, you obviously don't know me" I grabbed his hand in mine "we're going to BOTH get out of here.. together" I emphasized the word both. "We're going to break for the door ready" I put his arm around my shoulders again "Go" I said as we leapt up. I made my way to the door as fast as I could, carrying most of Matthews weight. The bullets seemed to shoot everywhere but us as we slammed the steel door behind us. I looked at the stairs ahead of us, "there's no way you can get me down those stairs alone" He said almost as if he could read my thoughts.
I looked around for the others but didn't see anyone "guys" I called out not receiving an echo in return. "Well looks like we don't have a choice" I said as I pushed us forward. It took a while and a lot of effort but we managed to get down a floor. "We need to stop" Matthew said holding onto a doorframe for support, as I nearly fell to the ground. I helped him sit, "we can do this, we just.. we just" I ran my grimy hands through my tangled short locks in frustration. "We need a break" he said gesturing to my side "forget about that" he continued a hint of mockery in his voice. I looked at the tattered cloth still tied loosely around red stained waist. "I know you think your so strong and powerful, but we're all human Cassy" he told me as he leaned back.
"What does that mean" I crossed my arms defensively "I'm just saying your going to keep pushing and pushing and pushing" he paused meeting my eyes "until you fall" he finished closing his eyes leaning back again. "We need to find the others" I changed the subject as I walked over to the window. "Why"? He asked "excuse me"? I looked at him. Was he seriously asking why we need to find the others, his friends? "Why are you like you are"? He asked more clearly. "I don't know what you mean, how do I act" I looked out the window cautiously.
"I mean I know your best friend died, your sister and friend left, you don't talk about parents so I'm guessing that ended badly" "but why are you so stubborn, so untrusting, why do you feel like it's your job to protect everyone" he still had his eyes closed. "I could as you the same thing" I retaliated sharply "there you go" he stated turning to look at me. I felt the heat of his eyes on my back but didn't look away from the window "you tell people what you want them to know, but when anyone says anything about your feelings you block them out" he continued when I stayed silent. "Is your leg still bleeding" I asked instead, wiping a tear from my cheek. I knew it was true, but I don't want anyone thinking I'm weak. They already pity me for what happened with Cody and May,  they probably think I'm going crazy from my infection. "I'm starting to think maybe you weren't alone that whole month" he added on.
I thought back to the man I shot and the girl who took Mays necklace. That was total bull crap, May didn't give it to her. She knows who May is, I know because... I told her.
