Chapter Eleven
Marco's First Drink
"Marco! Marco, slow down!" I called, leaping from moss spot to moss spot.
"You'd think someone was chasing him..." Jacos muttered from behind me.
I smirked a little, clutching my new bow in my hand. I had forgotten how much I really missed the old thing. It was made form flexible dark wood, and was carved with inreket engravings down all the sides. It was light and easy to carry, especially with the quiver that was easily strapped to my back. Honestly, I felt like running with Marco so I could get a chance to use it; but I restrained myself, knowing Jacos would never let me hear the end of it. Marco dashed back over to us, not even stepping on the moss patches. Probably used some sort of magic. Show off.
"You guys are so slow!" He panted. "Come! On!"
He swung his staff around as he talked excitedly his eyes gleaming.
"You are a little too exited about your new toy." I commented, smirking.
"Yeah," Jacos agreed. "How about I carry it for you a while?"
"Never!" Marco backed up quickly holding his staff close.
Jacos and I burst out laughing, at Marco's alarmed expression. "Calm down, Marco we aren't going to take your staff." I assured.
"Yes, I truly believe that. The thief says she wont steal it." He replied sarcastically.
Jacos laughed more. "He's got us there."
"I would like to add though, you are a thief too." I smirked.
Marco gave my a wry smile. "Exactly."
Jacos shook his head. "That doesn't make any sense, Marco."
"It doesn't have to, I'm a magician!" Marco grinned and a spark of blue light shot from the gem in his staff.
"Seriously Marco, you have to calm down with that." I said sternly, frowning at the light that was disappearing into the air.
Marco rolled his eyes and turned his back to us. "Yes, mother dear."
Jacos stifled a laugh. I frowned and shook my head a little. It was an understatement to say giving a fourteen year old boy magic was a terrible coincidence. Ahead, I could start to make out the outlines of trees from the woods we had walked out from just short days ago. It had been a little hard to say goodbye to Queen Satery and even some of the swamp people like Wise-Atee. The morning meal was surprisingly light hearted, and I can actually say I enjoyed the time. Which was why it stung to say farewell to the lonely Queen, whom we would most likely never see again. It didn't help me at all when I saw her eyes watering as we waved and leaped into the pool of water. I don't even want to remember the way back up, it was dark cold and extremely terrifying. I was actually surprised Jacos made it. Thank the stars he did.
"He's running ahead again..." Jacos muttered and strode ahead of me. "Marco! Have some self respect, boy!"
I chuckled to myself a little. I was always so happy with Jacos and Marco. Even when they did act immature. I suddenly remembered every single incident where their lives where in danger. I shuddered and pushed the flashing images away. They where like my brothers. My best friends. If one of them died, I would die. I suddenly remembered the vision and feeling I had felt while looking into the water basin. The thick liquid on my fingers, I knew what it was. Blood. My own scream echoed in my head. I shook my head, but I couldn't shake the feeling of complete loss. The dreadful thought of possibly losing-
