Chapter 14: Accentism
The two people pull away from each other, looking at me with wide eyes. I inwardly groan. No one needed to stain the clean chalkboard with their… doings.
I cross my arms, my gaze never leaving the spectacle that I’ve found in the classroom. I finally speak after a few minutes, “You do know actions speak louder than words, right?”
“I’m telling you, it’s not what it looks like,” Jared repeats himself one more time, his expression pleading. Nate is the (un)lucky person with him, his features drawn into one of horror.
Horror at being found out, I suppose?
“Well, I’m sorry, Contradictory Cassie, but you’re still doing it,” I grin, amused, and head to my seat as Jared quickly steps away from Nate and quickly sits beside me. Nate, in turn, practically runs to his seat, and I hear him murmur in confusion, “Contradictory Cassie?”
I don’t bother explaining my made-up phrase, and instead, I stifle my giggles when I remember what I had witnessed.
Now, when S told me I was going to like the surprise, I didn’t expect it to be that kind of surprise.
You see, I, Agatha Elizabeth Perez, had innocently opened the classroom door to see a serious Jared pinning a nervous Nate against the chalkboard, in what looked like an intimately cliché manner, in my opinion. To make things even better, their faces were nearing each other’s when I walked in, with their eyes intense and soulful, ice blue against grass green.
If I wasn’t mad with hatred at one of them, I’d be shipping it.
“And I thought you were going to be the submissive one in the relationship,” I mutter to Jared as a few more students trickle into the classroom. I sneak a glance at my watch. Eleven more minutes until the bell rings.
My seatmate looks miserable. “You’re getting the wrong idea, Aggie.”
“Am I?” My knowing grin widens. “Or am I getting the right one?”
“Agatha, you know I’m crushing on Faith,” Jared quietly whines. “What on earth would possess me to make a move on Nate?” He ends his sentence by cringing.
“I don’t know…” I shrug, pulling my notebook out of my bag. “You might be using your claims to liking Faith as a cover up, when in fact you and Nate have actually been sneaking around.”
I open my notebook and start doodling as Jared lets my words sink into his head. I’m nearly done with my caricature of Vice Principal Hawkins when Jared finally speaks up.
Can’t believe it took him four minutes to digest that.
“You don’t really believe that, do you?” My friend looks disturbed at the thought. “Nate’s dating Anna.”
“So?”
“You’re insane,” Jared finally states, and his accent suddenly switches, to my surprise. “It’s final: you need to be shipped to the loony bin immediately.”
I raise a brow once again. “The loony bin? Really? And what’s up with your accent?”
“I’m trying to work on my British accent,” Jared explains, reverting back to his normal voice.
“And can I ask why?”
“Agatha, it’s a universal truth that the British accent is the sexiest accent,” Jared says solemnly. “And look at me,” he gestures to himself. “I’ve got the looks, the brains, the brawn, and the last thing I need is the voice.”
