Evan’s Chapter: Preview
I watch as Maria waits for the girl’s reply.
"Uh, he's actually bisexual, and he really thinks Nate is cute," The girl’s voice starts to ramble through the speaker phone.
"But he's afraid of asking him out, since he has this idea that you two are dating, and he decided to ask me, but I told him I didn't know, so he made me ask you."
Maria giggles. "Seriously? What's his name?"
"I can't tell you that, Ria. He's really uncomfortable letting anyone know who he is and he only trusts me; which brings us to my question: are you and Nate dating?"
I raise a brow at that.
"Alright,” Maria begins. “Well, I have good news and bad news for that question. Good news, we aren't dating, since we don't like each other in that way.”
"And the bad news?" The girl sounds nervous.
"Nate's dating someone else, Aggie." Maria responds, her tone glum while her expression is anything but. "I hope our friend's okay with that piece of news."
"Yeah, sure." The girl says, just as glumly. But in her case, it’s genuine. "See you tomorrow, I guess."
Before Maria can hang up, Anna walks in dragging Nate by the hand, who is stumbling after her.
"Hey, Maria, Nate's drunk. Where do I bring him?" Anna asks. Her expression shows annoyance as Nate drunkenly staggers past her.
"I don't know. He's your boyfriend, after all," Maria says, letting her phone hang by her side. She then looks at her phone screen. “Huh. Looks like Agatha hung up.”
Nate reaches a beanbag and collapses. “Why are there stars shooting guns?” he murmurs, his dark locks of hair covering his eyes. “Pew, pew, pew…”
“How’d he get drunk that fast?” Anna shakes her head fondly. “I was only gone for a few minutes.” She ruffles his hair, and then stops.
“Dammit!” She mutters. “Forgot the Toblerone by the window.” She quickly leaves the room, not before whispering something to her boyfriend.
I look at Maria. “Hey, Maria- did you have to be mean to that girl?”
“You mean Agatha?” Maria asks, and when I nod, she giggles. “Aw, why are you worried? Aggie’s a big girl; she can handle it.”
She tries to take a step toward me then stumbles, causing me to catch her in my arms.
She looks at me, and her eyes seem to sparkle in the light.
I chuckle. “Really, Maria?”
“Sorry,” she says sheepishly. “Blame it on the drinks?” Suddenly, she loops her arms around my neck, taking me by surprise. My breath hitches.
She starts leaning in, and I can’t help but do the same. Her eyes, the shade of emeralds, are spellbinding, and just as she’s about to close the space between us-
The author ends the sneak peek. AHAHAHAHAH.
