Chapter 18: Do You Like Evan?

“So correct me if I’m wrong.” Eyes wide, Maria drags out each word in disbelief. “You received a love letter with a ring inside, and you’re wearing it, even though you have no idea who it’s from.”

I nod. So… I chose to tell the truth.

Honestly, I’m disappointed in you, my conscience sighs. You should’ve-

Please don’t make me regret my actions.

But that’s my job! I hear a snort within my head. Whatever, what’s done is done.

“You wore it during lunch, and when Susan confronted you about it, you lied.”

Nod.

“She didn’t believe your first lie, so you dragged Evan into this, even though he doesn’t know where you really got the ring from.”

Nod.

“But since you didn’t want Susan to assume you and Evan had a thing, you forced him to confess his non-existent feelings for someone else.”

Another nod.

“And instead of helping him, you dug a deeper grave for him instead.”

At this rate, my head’ll fall off my neck.

My friend shakes her head, partly amused. “So this is what happens when I’m not in your life?”

I just sigh pathetically. “Any advice now that you’re back in my life? I feel guilty for doing that to him.”

Maria furrows her brows, deep in thought. “I suppose you can just call and apologize, but Evan’s the kind of guy who can hold a grudge. When we were younger and we made him cry or whatnot, he’d ignore us until we stripped away our dignity and did whatever he wanted us to do.”

“So… you became his slaves?” I say.

“Pretty much- he still has the videos of us kissing his feet and calling him Emperor Evan,” The redhead says, ignoring my disgusted look. “But I don’t know- maybe he’s changed. Maybe he’ll be more forgiving. Hopefully.”

I let out a forced chuckle. “It can’t be that bad.”

Maria raises a brow. I clear my throat. “Okay then.”

“But really Aggie, thanks for clearing that rumour up for me,” my friend starts typing something in her phone. “Then I guess I’ve got to stop Susan.”

My eyes narrow at her last words. “What did you just say?”

“Um… nothing.”

Maria.”

The slightest hints of a blush appear in Maria’s cheeks. “Don’t get mad, but I kind of… helped Susan in planning a prank on Laura a few hours ago.”

I look at her with horror. “Maria!”

“I just told you not to get mad!” She whines. She holds up her phone. “Look, I’m gonna stop her before she starts it!”

“And what exactly, was this plan?” I ask with forced calm.

Maria lowers her eyes. “We were… supposed to plant a few paint bombs in her locker. So tomorrow morning…” She doesn’t finish her sentence.

I keep quiet as well.

I quickly opened my bags and let most of the contents fall down beside me. My brown wig was pulled into a ponytail, and my fake glasses gleamed due to the light which came from the chandelier below me.
