Emily's POV
Ever since Luke left that day, he's been acting weird. He's distanced himself from everyone, limited his social contact with many people, and he's avoiding me. I don't know what happened, accept that peculiar phone call, but I want to know if he's okay.
How can I get through to him?
Ugh. Why can't boys be simple and easy to talk to?
You know what, screw this. I'm calling him.
"Hello?" Luke answers quietly.
"Hey, Luke! wanna come over?" I ask cheerfully.
"Oh.. Um.. Sure." He clears his throat. "I'll be over in 10." And he hung up.
A half an hour has passed and Luke still isn't here. I'm growing concerned and impatient and I'm ready to cry.
Why is he shutting me out?
Why is he just blowing me off, like he didn't just say he'd come over.
This is why I don't trust people.
That's one thing that Trent taught me.
Never trust anyone.
Sudden images flash through my mind and I find myself with tears flowing down my cheeks. He betrayed me. He hurt me. And now I'm letting someone else hurt me.
My door opens and I hear Luke clear his throat.
"I'm sorry I'm late." His voice sounds strained.
I sniff.
"Emily.. I'm sorry.. I- I didn't mean to make you cry.." He steps towards me cautiously.
"You didn't. I was just.." I clear my throat.
"What's wrong Em." He asks. Full concern lacing his voice.
I look up at him.
"No one has called me that since my grandpa passed away." Tears brim my eyes again. I continue staring at him.
"I wasn't crying because of you. I promise. I was just crying because of-"
"Trent." Luke says sternly.
"How did you..."
"Why didn't you tell me... Or anyone? Why didn't you tell someone that he tried to rape you?"
That word.
That four letter word that means so much more than "losing your virginity."
It means you're getting it stolen. Taken away from you, like it's nothing. But it's something. It's your innocence.
"I guess I just didn't want to make it a big deal." I say quietly.
"Make it a big deal?! You aren't making anything a big deal, Emily! He is! He did!" Luke raises his voice.
"Luke, calm down. Please." I'm shaking now.
Luke stares at me with anger and hurt in his eyes. His veins are prominent in his neck, and his face is getting red, as he breathes in and out, calming himself down. Or, trying at least.
"I'm so sorry, Emily." Luke sits down.
"It's not your fault, Luke." I place my head in my hands.
"It is though." He confesses.
What?
"What do you mean?"
"I just went over to his house and cussed him out. And told his mom, and punched him in the face." he giggles.
"Luke, thank you. Thank you so much." I wrap my arms around him, letting out a quiet giggle.
"Is that why you've been avoiding me?" I ask.
"No, I've been avoiding you because I thought you thought I was annoying.." he trails off. "I mean, I practically told you I liked you the day I met you, and, the day you broke up with your boyfriend."
"What?" He likes me..?
"Oh.." He gulps.
"Luke I-"
"It's fine. I should go." He hangs his head.
"Luke stop. You're not gonna leave my house and avoid me like you did last time. Now, get your butt over here, and sit down." I point my finger to the ground next to where I'm sitting.
And Luke just stared at me.
And I stared at him.
And for the first time In forever, I felt like I was alive.
