Being one of the eldest of Truculent in the Justice Building of District Twelve, he is advised to equip the pupils to the best training from their First Test and blood work. Everyone knew him as the old drunk back then when his first sweetheart was murdered, now he is mostly known to be the most aggressive, unsympathetic teacher there ever has been. You shouldn't be scared for your First Test, you should be scared of what happens after with Mr. Abernathy.
Haymitch Abernathy has been at the Justice Building for who knows how long, just about everyone knows him and has had him as a trainer or coach. If you're lucky, you get a teacher a little less... like Haymitch or you get Haymitch.
He wasn't always so hard headed.
He was in love, he was happy when he first got to the Justice Building. His girl couldn't follow him inside since she wasn't Truculent, but she was something else. She eventually was living with him in the Justice Building for a long time. Until the one eventful day that changed everything.
They were patrolling high waters of the King of the Sea, when something hit the boat, tilting it. At first, the couple saw it as nothing but a heavy wave. Then it hit again, and they thought wrong. Haymitch made her promise she would stay on the boat no matter what, that she would get to land as fast as she could if anything happened. She promised. But failed it later.
They were dealing with an active pack of Truculent sharks, people who had the ability to transform themselves into the animal, and were attacking the boat on which they were sailing. Only these types of Truculent were found in the Capitol, where the president did tests and experiments on Truculent and made them his army. Sharks, were one of them.
Truculent called the presidents experimented Truculent, Muttations, mutts for short. They were programmed to kill any Truculent they encounter. And today, they found Haymitch and Maysliee. Haymitch was an Ice Contractor, for every man had this or yet another power to control. He battled the many mutts alone, while Maysliee steered the boat to land. It was too late to call for help, but Haymitch could surely handle this himself. He had already taken down half of the mutt pack, dealing with a few more and they were safe.
It was until one shark hit the side of the boat, making follow the others. Haymitch didn't have time to grab Maysliee as she fell into the sea, screaming. Haymitch quickly killed the rest of the pack, jumping into the water to search for his love.
Searching did nothing to help, he returned to the boat he was sailing and called for help to the Justice Building. After a few minutes of waiting, six or seven men and women came as a search party to help look for Maysliee.
Haymitch was injured, and was assured to head back to the Justice Building to get help. He fought to stay until he realized he couldn't do anything to help if he was injured, so he went. The nurses in the Medical Hall patched him up and he was in bed, resting.
It wasn't until the next morning the search party came back. All night and day they were searching for Maysliee. Everyone knew her, they knew her well enough to know she was in love with Haymitch and was one of the sweetest people anyone could meet. It troubled everyone when they heard the news.
Haymitch was the first to know, they indeed did find Maysliee, but she wasn't alive. He was devastate, he didn't allow anyone to have a funeral for her. Haymitch knew she didn't want any of that sort of thing. That was when he changed, he started drinking, dropped from training pupils, stayed in his room all day, never ate. He had came so close to giving up in life, until one day, he thought to himself of Maysliee in a different way. If she were alive, she would scream at the top of her lungs, telling him to get off his lazy ass and go give some kids his knowledge in training. She would force him to eat something, throw the bottles of liquor out the window and force him to take a bath.
