I got home from school, ditching the rest of the day. I tossed my bag onto the floor before laying on my bed with tears already rolling down my cheeks. I was stupid to think that I would be able to manage going to school today. I guess I was just too desperate to find a way out and finally move on. I wanted to move on, I really did but I just couldn't. Everything just reminded me of Maddie.

"Where's everyone else?" Maddie asked as she opened her front door and let me in.
"Dani said she had a huge project to finish and Rose said her family was going out to dinner" I reply as I follow Maddie up to her room.
"Well, I guess it's just the two of us tonight" Maddie said as we sat on her bed. I stayed at her house for hours and the entire time we talked. With Maddie, there is always something to talk about and that was one of the many things I loved about her. As soon as it started to get late, I got up from her bed and started gathering my things.
"You're leaving?" Maddie says.
"Yeah" I reply as I put on my jacket.
"Why don't you stay here for the night" Maddie suggests as she sat up on her bed with her legs crossed. I thought about it for a while before I took off my jacket and sat back down on her bed.
"Yeah, I'll stay" I say and a smile formed on her face. I texted my mom, telling her that I was staying over before I looked over at Maddie. We both changed into clothes to sleep in before we both laid on her bed and started to fall asleep.
"Emily, are you awake?" My eyes open when I heard Maddie's voice. I turn to face her and she was already looking at me.
"Is everything okay?" I whisper to her as I stare into her dark brown eyes and Maddie just looked at me with no expression on her face.
"Yeah..." Maddie replies and then her eyes wandered off before she looked at me once more, "you know that I'm always here for you right?"
"Yeah, I know... Maddie, where is this coming from?" I ask.
"I don't know... I just wanted you to know that" Maddie says. I smile at her as I move a strand of red hair away from her face.

"Emily?" I hear someone say. My door in my room opens and Dani and Rose file into my room. I wipe my eyes with the back of my hand as I remember everything about that night with Maddie. It was the last night I got to spend with her before she disappeared.
Rose sat on the edge of my bed as Dani remained standing with her arms crossed. Both of them had concerned looks on their face and I just felt like I couldn't deal with them right now, I didn't want to be lectured, I just wanted to be alone.
"Are you okay?" Rose asked me as she laid her hand on top of mine and I just nodded my head without saying a word. There were just no words to describe how I was feeling or what I was feeling. All I knew is that I needed Maddie here to tell me that it was going to be okay, that was the kind of reassurance I needed but I knew I wouldn't get that. Maddie is still missing after a year.
"Emily..."
"I don't know what you two want from me or expect from me. Whatever it is, you're not getting it because I'm broken. And every time you try and fix me, I break" I say with tears in my eyes.
Both of them remained silent. I stood up and walked towards my door, "Please... just leave" I tell them but none of them move. I looked at Dani waiting for her to say something but, for the first time, she had nothing to say. They both slowly stood up and walked out of my room where I closed the door behind them. I fell to the floor with my back against the door unable to contain myself.
"We're not leaving you, Emily, we're never leaving you" I hear Dani say through the other side of the door. "Whatever you need, we're here, please.... please know that" she pleads.
"I know this is hard, Em, but let us help you. Let us understand what's been hurting you" Rose says and it sounded like she was crying. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised because she was the more emotional one.
"Please stop pushing us away, Em... I need you... we need you... your family needs you... we can't lose you the way we lost Maddie..." Dani says and more tears rolled down my cheeks. I stood back up and opened the door and faced my two best friends.
Rose looked at me and wrapped her arms around me in an embrace and Dani wrapped her arms around both of us.
"I'm sorry" I mumble to both of them as we break away from each other.
"You have nothing to be sorry for" Dani says as she wipes away a tear with her thumb.
