Rose's POV
"I'm just worried about her" Dani tells me the next day. She told me about Emily and I just felt so helpless. I just wanted to be there for her but every time Dani and I try to do something for her, she pushes us away. I for one could no longer stand to see Emily suffer the way she is suffering. I can't see her hurting anymore.
"Dani. What the hell are we doing?" I say as I stop walking and turn to face her.
"What do you mean?" She asks as she furrows her brows.
"What I mean is, what are we doing wrong that makes Emily push us away?" I say and Dani sighs. I knew she was hoping to change the topic but I was done giving Emily space. She's my friend, and the last thing I want is for her to get hurt even more.
"We're not doing anything wrong, Rose. She just needs... time"
"We've given her so much time, we've given her so much space and I am done watching her go through this alone" With that, I turn and walk away and Dani calls my name.
"Where are you going, we're going to be late for class?" Dani calls out and I stop and turn to face her once more.
"I'm going to help a friend" and with that I head the other direction to Emily's house. It wasn't that long of a walk but by the time I got there, I was tired. The North Carolina heat didn't help. With a sigh, I walk up the steps to her house and ring the doorbell.
I patiently wait until the door slowly opens and Emily appears in the door frame.
"Rose? What are you doing here?" She asks, confused, "shouldn't you be in school?"
"Shouldn't you be in school?" I ask and Emily just stared down at the floor. She opened the door wider to let me in. I follow her up to her room where we both sit on her bed.
"So what are you doing here? You're not one to miss school" Emily says and I let out a sigh.
"Just talk to me, Em. Please?" I say and she just shakes her head and looks away from me. "I came here to talk... Em we lost Maddie and god... I can't lose you too" I say and I can feel tears form in my eyes.
"I can't just stand on the sidelines and watch you beat yourself up because of Maddie... Emily... I miss you... please, just talk to me. That's all I ask" I say and then it stayed silent. Neither of us said anything. The only sound that filled the air was the soft humming of the air conditioning.
"Okay" I hear Emily say and I look at her and for the first time I look into her eyes. They were filled with sadness and defeat but that didn't change anything. She was still Emily, "okay" she says again.
"I loved her, Rose... with everything that I had. I thought about her all the time, she sometimes made it nearly impossible to concentrate at school. And she'd smile at me and I would get this feeling... like I can conquer the world" Emily says.
"Madison? Did you ever tell her?" I ask and Emily shakes her head no.
"She wasn't into me like that, she just never was."
"Well, you didn't know because you never asked" I say and Emily looks at me with sadness in her eyes.
"I didn't want to ruin our friendship" Emily says and I nod in understanding.
"She loved you, maybe not in the way you would have hoped but she loved you. I know she did" I say and Emily just shrugs her shoulder, "tell me about her" I say.
"About Maddie?" You already know her" Emily says and I shake my head with a smile.
"I do know her, but you know a side of her that most of us don't" I reply.
"I loved her eyes... her light brown eyes. I could stare at them for hours and just get loss in them. And she's kind, she cares about you and she's genuine and absolutely beautiful. I look at her and every time I do, I feel safe. And every time she hugs me, it's like electricity going through my entire body and I have never felt that way before. And whenever she said my name.. my stomach would drop. Everything that she is... I loved" Emily says and she gave me a small smile with tears in her eyes.
I stared at Emily. For some reason I felt like I understood her, I felt like I knew what she was going through. I had an answer.
"Emily..." I lean over and wrap my arms around her and she when she hugs me back, I felt relieved. I knew that I did something right.
