I watched the rain pour outside my window as I sat on my cushioned bench at the foot of my bed. Wuthering Heights layed open on my lap, but the weather outside seemed to captivate my attention more than the old english in front of me. Tired from my many hours of reading, I got up stretched my arms and legs, then, after gently placing my book back on its shelf, I trudged over to my bathroom.

"Eva, time for dinner!" Paula, my stepmother, called.

"I'll be down in a second!" I answered.

When I was 11, my parents got a divorce. I wasn't traumatized by it, like my parents feared. It was more of a relief really. They got along much better afterwards and it made holidays more bearable.

Not long after the divorce, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought hard for two years, but I could see the life inside her slipping away. Being a doctor at the hospital himself, my father visited her everyday. I could tell that he still loved her, even if they couldn't save their marriage.

One morning my dad and I received a call from the hospital, she wouldn't make it past noon. We flew up there as fast as we could and made it just in time to say our goodbyes.

About a year later, my dad started dating a nurse at the other hospital across town. He then married her two years later. Paula and my dad have been happily married for almost two years now. I like Paula, she's more of a friend than a mother figure to me, and she has never tried to replace my mom. She holds a lot of respect for her and even keeps her picture on the mantle piece in the living room.

After I finished washing my face and throwing my hair up into a messy bun, I headed downstairs.

"Spaghetti tonight!" Paula exclaimed when I entered the kitchen.

"Yum, my favorite." I had to hand it to Paula, she was a great cook.

After brushing my teeth and laying my clothes out for school tomorrow, I crawled into bed.

Tomorrow will be my first day of my senior year at Bayside High. I was nervous and excited all at the same time! As long as I get to see Bella, my best friend, I'll be fine.
