Fog sat in wait on top of a boulder, hidden in the tall pines. He made sure to blanket the entire area in fog, so that if his brother decided to confront him, he would need to find him first. The area was getting darker and darker with each passing minute.
Is she coming? Fog thought. Maybe she got lost. Should I go look for her?
Fog didn't need to wait long. Soon, he heard Pulsar's voice calling out. "Fog? Where are you?"
Fog launched into the air and followed Pulsar's voice, nearly crashing into her when he turned a corner around a tree trunk. Pulsar opened her mouth to gasp, but Fog's talon darted out to snap her mouth shut. Fog raised a claw to his mouth and made a shushing motion before perking his ears up. Nothing.
After making sure the coast was clear, Fog led Pulsar to the top of one of the taller pine trees. It reached up to be level with the base level of the Palace, so Fog and Pulsar had a good view of the spiral staircase that led down into the mountain.
"So, what is that favor you asked of me?" Pulsar asked in a low whisper.
"I need an extra pair of eyes," Fog responded in an equally low tone. "I'm watching the mountain,"
"That's all?" Pulsar whispered. "Uhm... Okay, then. What are we looking for?"
"A CloudWing and a SkyWing travelling together," Fog responded. "I'm looking for them, and I suspect that they may come back to the palace in search of something,"
"You're being awfully vague," Pulsar commented.
"I don't have much to go on right now," Fog answered truthfully.
The sky darkened into the black color it takes during the night, the stars glittering and the light from the moons providing little light for Fog and Pulsar to spy with. During their wait, Pulsar had ended up hanging upside down from a branch by her tail while Fog was laying down on his belly with his arms, legs, wings, and tail hanging limply off the branch.
Pulsar yawned loudly. "Fog, I don't think they're coming,"
"There may still be a possibility," Fog countered, stifling his own yawn that bubbled up from his throat.
"I don't think you'll find what you are looking for there," came a new voice. Pulsar yelped in surprise and nearly dropped down from her perch had Fog not reacted fast enough to catch her by the wing. Looking down, Fog spied the one and only Cloud the SkyWing.
"Cloud? What are you doing here?" Fog asked in a harsh whisper. Go away, Cloud! You're distracting us!
"You won't find what you're looking for there," Cloud responded, sounding breathless as if he had run the entire way. "Please get down from there. A guard will spot you and report you, and both of you will get into more trouble than it's worth,"
"Oh? What are you, part NightWing?" Pulsar asked, dropping down to join Cloud on the ground. Fog blinked in surprise, but decided to join her after shooting another looking at the palace. As if Cloud was part NightWing, Fog spotted the faint outline of a guard on patrol winging their way over towards the palace. When Fog landed on the ground next to Pulsar, Cloud was answering Pulsar's question.
"No, no," he said. Fog noticed the slight glaze over his eyes, as if Cloud had sprinkled silver dust in his eyes. "I uh... Just have this feeling is all,"
