You were going to visit Japan's home for a couple of days. When you informed him that you would be traveling to his place, he offered to give you a tour around. Without a second thought, you happily took his offer and excitedly awaited the day of the departure.

Being the personification of Japan himself, Japan knew his home inside out so he managed to show you the most wonderful places around the city of Tokyo, Kyoto, and other well-known cities. He was the best tour guide you could have ever gotten!

After a long tour around town, you both went back to his house to rest before night fell. It was incredibly nice of him to let you stay at his house instead of booking an expensive hotel room. With a content smile, you spent the evening eating dinner and chatting with Japan.

Before you realized it, it was already late in the evening so Japan had decided to call it a night because you had to depart early tomorrow. You reluctantly agreed and went to the guest room to lay in the futon he prepared for you.

He's so hospitable and nice, you thought as you lay on your futon.

Closing your eyes, you forced yourself to fall asleep but to no avail. You tossed and turned, yet no matter what you do you really couldn't sleep. Since you weren't going to fall asleep anytime soon, you decided to get some fresh air in the engawa of his house. The engawa was an outer corridor around the perimeter of his house; a sort of Japanese porch.

You snuck out of your room and quietly walked towards his garden using your phone as your flashlight. Once you've reached the side of the engawa that was facing his backyard, you sat on the cold wooden floor and admired his well-kept garden. Sadly, you could not see his lovely, colorful flowers due to the lack of light, but his garden contained a large pond which was glistening thanks to the moonlight; it was most probably filled with koi fishes sound asleep. You looked around and felt that the atmosphere was very tranquil and calm.

This feels so relaxing...

You looked up at the dark sky filled with sparkling stars and stared in admiration at the glowing full moon. However, the silence was broken by Japan's footsteps which made the wooden floor creak at his every step. The raven-haired man noticed you sitting on the floor and seemed slightly surprised.

"___-san, why are you still awake at this hour?" He questioned.

"I'm sorry. I couldn't fall asleep," you explained apologetically.

"Is that so? It can't be helped then."

"To be honest, I don't wanna go back home, yet." You frowned and added, "I really enjoyed my stay here, but I wish I could stay just a little longer..."

Japan smiled gently and sat beside you.

"It is unfortunate that you must leave so soon," he told you in agreement and further added, "I hope you will come back to visit again."

You gleefully nodded in excitement at his kind words and told him, "I will come back for sure!"

A moment of silence passed by as the two of you looked up at the dark sky with countless twinkling stars, while the moon calmly watched over the both of you.

"Japan?" You mumbled.

"Yes?" He turned to you and replied; his eyes urging you to continue.

"The moon is so beautiful tonight, huh?" You remarked as you gazed at the moon with a sweet smile adorning your face.

When he did not respond to your comment, you curiously turned your head in his direction and found him looking at the ground. It was rather dark around and the moon was your only source of light so you didn't notice it immediately; however, as you stared at his face longer you were able to take note of his slightly flushed cheeks.

"What's wrong, Japan?" You asked looking concerned.

"I-it is nothing," he answered nervously. He relaxed a bit and concurred with your opinion, "The moon is indeed especially beautiful tonight."

He gave you a quick glance and looked away; his face changing into a slightly darker shade of red. Then he murmured quietly, "I wonder why?"

You tilted your head and thought silently, Japan is acting strange right now...

Then an idea came to your mind which made you smile. Maybe this will cheer him up!

"Tsu-ki," you whispered softly to the sky.

"E-eh!?" Japan looked at you completely surprised; a dark red blush decorating his face. "_-__-san!?"

D-did I pronounce it wrong? You thought worriedly.

"Tsu-ki... tsuki... tsuki!" You repeated the foreign word a few times to check if you were pronouncing it properly. "It means 'moon' in English, right?"

"Ahhh," he said in realization and composed himself. "Hai. You are correct, ___-san."

"Um, tsuki ga kirei desu, ne?" You told him in his native tongue with a bright smile.

"S-sou desu," He stuttered a bit; a light blush was rapidly returning to his cheeks.

"Did I say it correctly?" You asked and he nodded his head in reply. "Hehe, I'm learning bit by bit~!"

"Yes. You're a fast learner, ___-san," he complimented and smiled gently at you.

The next day, you returned back home feeling quite dispirited.

"Back to work starting this week, I guess," you muttered and consequently let out a deep sigh.

Suddenly, you remembered that you promised Japan you will be sending a text saying that you've returned home safely as soon as you got back. So, you set your bag on the table and began rummaging inside it to find your phone.

"Where is it?"

However, instead of your phone, you found your recently bought Japanese phrasebook, reminding you of your short time in Japan which brought a smile to your face.

"Oh, right. I should practice my writing, too!" You uttered aloud.

I wonder how you write that phrase in Japanese?

With that thought in mind, you swiftly headed to your room and approached the laptop sitting on your desk. You brought your laptop to life and typed the Japanese sentence you told Japan last night in the Google search bar.

In a blink of an eye, thousands of results came into view, but you particularly took notice of the top-most result.

"Hey! There's an anime called like that," you said in total surprise and then decided to click on it to read more details about it. "I see. It sounds like a slice of life anime!"

You scrolled further down as you scan the Wikipedia page and one of its headings caught your eye. "'Other meanings'?"

Eyes sparkling with interest, you began to read the small paragraph under the heading: "While directly translated as 'the moon is beautiful', the phrase 'tsuki ga kirei desu ne' is a famous Japanese way to say 'I love you.'"

You froze as you finished reading that sentence.

A way of saying I love you?

Realization suddenly struck you as you finally grasped the reason why Japan acted the way he did when you said those words to him.

"AHHH!" You screamed as you grabbed your head with your hands. A red hue started spreading on your cheeks as you yelled, "I unknowingly confessed to him!!!"

Now that I think about it... 'tsuki' sounds very similar to 'suki,' too!

You covered your face with your hands in embarrassment, "How am I gonna face him, now!?"

"At least he didn't seem offended by it", you murmured thoughtfully.

...but...

...what I said...

...isn't really far from the truth.
