Exhausted.
Yes, that was the word you were searching for. You were utterly exhausted. That's why you came to the garden with your close friend, Louis Schmit, to relax and admire the beauty of the flowers that were basking under the sun.
As you sat on the stone bench with Louis, you eyed the surrounding vibrant roses, pansies, and tulips. You'd rather admire their colorful petals as opposed to being drowned with mathematical equations and thousands of words on paper.
Ever since the week before the exams started, you and Louis had been doing nothing but reading pages after pages of your textbooks and constantly flipping sheets of line paper with all your notes jotted down, desperate to cram as much knowledge and facts into your brains within a short time frame. As a result, you both felt extremely spent from all the stress you had accumulated over the week, but, at the same time, relieved that it was all over and that you had all survived.
Currently, Louis' head was leaning onto your shoulder and, to provide more comfort, you lifted your hand to caress his soft and silky blond locks.
"Being with you, ___, has never failed to make me relax," he mumbled out of the blue and breathed out a content sigh.
"I'm glad to hear that," you replied as a light pink blush dusted your cheeks.
"If only you could stay with me forever."
"H-huh!?"
He chuckled to express his mirth and amusement, "So cute~"
"Jeez, you're always such a tease, Louis," you pouted and crossed your arms.
"I really do mean what I said, though. After all—" You jolted a bit when Louis encircled his arms around your waist and brought you closer to his chest. Then, he sweetly whispered into your ear with a deep, gentle voice, "you're the person I love the most."
At his sudden confession, your breath hitched in surprise and bewilderment.
Did I hear him right? You mentally asked yourself in disbelief. Suddenly, you became aware of your beating heart so you placed a hand on your chest and, surprisingly, felt its erratic thumping under your touch. Clueless as to how to react in this situation, you uttered words without really giving them much thought, "I think I have tachycardia right at this moment."
Feeling slightly perplexed but mostly amused, Louis tilted his head at your statement and asked, "I assume that means your heart is beating fast, then?"
The growing shyness within you pushed you to avoid his gaze. As a response to his question, you nodded your head and mumbled, "Yeah, I'm very surprised. I... I would never have expected you to fancy someone like, like—" you paused and dipped your head low, "...me."
"___... Don't say that," he whispered in a somber tone; even without facing him, you could clearly perceive the sadness laced in each of his words. He tightened his hold on you as he profoundly pondered how he could increase your self-regard in a more positive way. What could he say to prove how truly amazing you are?
While he was contemplating deeply, you were melting into his strong embrace. Relishing in his warmth spreading into your body, you wished you could just remain in his arms for a while. You liked giving your dear friend hugs, but receiving hugs from him made you happier. Still, you knew you have yet to face his feelings; you couldn't leave things as they were.
"Louis," you called for his attention. "I really don't how to respond to your confession because..." You stopped for a moment and searched for words that could describe your feelings for him, but it all felt like a mixture of paint with each color representing a single emotion. "...I've been feeling confused about my feelings for you."
