so you do have friends? (part one)
the group of kids had spent the rest of the day at ben's house and hadn't kept track of time. curfew was right around the corner and they were all going to be in trouble if they didn't get home sooner or later. they exchanged their goodbyes as they got on their bikes and began riding off.
eleanor and stanley took the same route home together while the others took their own. the ride was quiet, the occasional whir of wind interrupting it. "wanna come have dinner at my place?" eleanor asked breaking the silence.
"curfew is in like twenty minutes though?" the curly haired boy stated and she laughed softly at him.
"we can stop by your house, pick up whatever you need and you can stay the night at mine," she explained. "or you don't have to! it was just an idea," the dark haired girl rushed when he didn't reply.
"no, no! i'd love to stay over!" he exclaimed and she turned to face him as she rode along the empty road. there was a part of her screaming to shut him out, but the part telling her to let him in overpowered it.
"i was the girl in that article about the stabbing and stuff," she murmured quietly as she prayed he wouldn't hear her. "i was wondering when you would tell me," he laughed softly and she gave an awkward chuckle in return.
"yeah, i figured out of all those losers, you'd figure it out," she smiled softly and he nodded. "why'd they do it? if you don't mind me asking?" the curly haired boy inquired as they turned into his street.
"they never gave me a solid reason, probably just because they were assholes," eleanor replied with a huff. "i just thought they were my friends, ya know? it totally sucked to only have my little sister as a friend after that, but i was scared."
"you didn't want to make new friends because you thought they would do the same thing, right?" stanley asked as if he didn't already know the answer and they stopped in front of his house.
"yeah. then my sister, well, she was murdered and this shit started happening," the dark haired girl answered and he nodded as if he understood before turning back to his house.
"i'll go grab my stuff and tell my dad i'm staying at one of the boys house, just wait out here," he stated before walking up the path and entering the house and coming back out ten minutes later.
"be home by tomorrow morning, and you better study the torah hard tomorrow!" his father called from inside. the curly haired boy shrugged the bag on his back and got on his bicycle.
"sorry about my dad, i'm supposed to be learning the torah for my bar mitzvah soon," eleanor couldn't help but notice the slight flush on his face from embarrassment and she almost squealed in amusement.
"don't worry about it, anyways let's get going before my mum thinks something has happened to me," eleanor joked as they started riding again, not having to travel far before reaching the young girls home.
the blue eyed girl dropped her bike in the front yard near the door and stanley stood it up against the panelling of the house, along with his. eleanor struggled with the key before finally unlocking the door and entering. "i'm home! i have a friend over too!" the young girl called.
stan smiled at her, happy she was warming u pro the idea of having friends. "a friend?!" they heard her mother shriek from the kitchen and eleanor felt her face heat up. "yeah a friend!" she called back as she gestured for stan to sit his back on a hook near the door, as she hung hers up too.
"do i get to meet this friend?!" karen called out to her daughter as she mashed the potatoes. eleanor softly grabbed stan's hand before guiding him to the kitchen. she reluctantly let go, as much as she enjoyed holding hands with the boy.
"ma, this is stan. he's one of my friends and lives a street away," the short girl explained and her mother pushed her greying hair from her face before shaking hands with the boy. "i'm karen james, it's nice that my daughter has finally made some friends around town."
eleanor groaned in embarrassment before grabbing his hand again, "he can stay the night right? we'll set up the air mattress in my room and leave the door open."
"only if the door stays open, no funny business. now stan, i hope you like vegetables, mashed potato and roast chicken," karen smiled kindly and the boy nodded before responding politely. the older woman took note of the traits he had, hoping that he would help her daughter overcome her issues.
"great! show him around and i'll finish cooking supper!" she cheered before going back to the pot of half mashed potatoes and eleanor began to give a house tour from there.
the young girl was just hoping her father wouldn't come and ruin everything as usual.
