I couldn't help shedding a few tears when I walked away. I had no one who cared about me anymore, and I had no one to care for.
I have nothing.
I didn't know what to do, or where to go.
I left without a plan.
I ended up wandering aimlessly, and I found myself going in their same direction that I always did when I left the house. I was walking to the Main Street, towards the shops.
Once I had realised where I was going, I quickly hid behind the trees, I was next to the IronWorks Factory. It was so strange to hear it silent.
I looked out from the trees and looked at the scene behind the shops.
There was nothing there.
I had expected for there to be a few of those things, but there was nothing.
Just a lot of litter was scattered about.
I walked up to the metal railings and slipped through a gap where a bar had been pulled off. It lead to the front of three shops.
When I looked round the corner there was a big group of those things.
Upon closer look I noticed that these creatures acted exactly like zombies, maybe that's what they are. They weren't at the front doors, they were gathered in the carpark, but I could see that I couldn't get in through the main entrance without being spotted.
I went round to the back door where the gap in the fence was, it had no handle on the outside, just a lock.
I opened my bag and got out a crowbar and left my baseball bat on the floor. After failing trying to open it by force, I had to pick the lock. I took the bobby pin from my hair and got a needle out of my emergency sewing kit, and I proceeded to pick the lock.
After ten minutes of trying to unlock it, I heard a cluck and I prized it open with the crowbar.
The door swung open revealing the dark storeroom.
There was a putrid smell of gone off milk and mouldy fruit. But I just had to cover my nose and try to ignore it.
There were shelves and shelves of boxes filled with tinned food.
I went into the shop and I got a trolley and took everything that was left on the shelves. There wasn't much as most of it had been raided.
I was now stuck with hauling a trolly about, but I decided it would be worth it when I've got plenty of supplies.
There were bottles of water in the storeroom, which was lucky seeing as the shop was completely clear of it. Water had been one of the main things looted because of the drought.
I was pushing the trolley along when it suddenly stopped and I hit my face off the handle bar.
I had pushed it into a chain that had been dumped on the floor. But it gave me an idea. If I chained up all the doors from the inside and climbed out the window and locked it, then no one could get in and I could come back here and there would be plenty of food.
But first I cleared all the bad food and dumped it outside, so it looked like it had already been raided.
Then I locked the door that connected the shop and the storeroom and I put the trolley outside. I locked that door and climbed out the window and put a padlock on it. Then I put the key in my pocket.
The wheels of the trolley were squeaky and the whole thing rattled on every stone. It was quite loud, and highly annoying. I was afraid of drawing attention to myself because I didn't know if these things were attracted to sound.
I went back through the broken fence and I headed towards the doctor's surgery, behind there was an old path that was slightly overgrown and surrounded by a row of trees.
The narrow path was mostly gravel which made it extremely difficult to move the trolley and I ended up dragging it along instead, even though it was extremely heavy after being filled with cans.
I got to a fork in the path. There were two different ways I could go, up the hill towards the pharmacy or the long way through the trees that lead to a backroad.
I needed to get to pharmacy sooner or later, to stock up on different medicines. So I took the path up the hill.
I decided to struggle and drag the trolley up it instead of risking it being stolen if I left it. It was a tiring task and I almost let go a few times, which would have made a huge racket with cans flying everywhere.
I successfully got to the top, and I went through the alley onto the main street. I was now next to the pharmacy. There was no one about. The coast was clear.
I pushed the door open and the bell rang.I pulled the trolley into the shop and all the cans rattled when it went over the small step.
I kept still for a while. Nothing seemed to be there,it was probably safe. I hid the trolley behind a shelf.I got a few bottles of 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner, and I got some tubes of toothpaste. I went behind the counter and got some paracetamol and my prescription inhalers, and as many others that I could find.
I also grabbed a bag of blueberry cough sweets, because why not, they are my favourite.
I got my trolley back and headed outside. It was now about midday. I had at least nine hours till sundown. I needed to find somewhere to rest before nightfall.
I decided it would be best to get out of town, to where it was less densly populated. So I followed the Main Street till I was on the edge of town.
I was now tired from hauling the trolley around, I needed to find somewhere to rest. I went up a back street and found a house with a wide enough gate to fit the trolley through.
The terraced house had a small backyard with a shed in it, and it was unlocked, so I put my trolley in there, so it was hidden.
I peered through the back window of the house. There was no sign of movement.
I noticed that the back door was slightly ajar, so I pushed it and it easily swung open.
I stepped into the kitchen and I could hear the echoing of my footsteps bounce around the room loudly as I crept through.
Going through all the rooms I felt so alone. Just hearing my footsteps and nothing else. There wasn't the humming of electric running through the building, no sound of children laughing and crying, no sound of teenagers chatting and playing music in the streets, no sound of vehicles out on the road. There was nothing, even the birds were silent.
It was so eerie, lonely, sad.The house was completely empty.
I managed to haul my trolley into the house. The house keys were in a pot next to the front door so I went around locking the doors and windows, making sure that it was secure.
I was safe for now.
But I still needed a plan of where to go next.
