Ha Sun's POV
After trudging through an exasperating day, the kind of day that seems to drag on endlessly, I found myself determined to carve out a new course for my destiny. This afternoon, I was scheduled to meet Chanyeol, a friend of my acquaintance, Min Nyuk. Reflecting on my earlier phone call with Min Nyuk, I couldn’t help but cringe a little at how embarrassing it had turned out.
“Min Nyuk! How long did it take you to pick up my call?” I exclaimed, my voice tinged with irritation more than I intended.
“Wh—why are you so mad? Honestly, your frustration is a bit of a mystery to me. Can you speak plainly?” he shot back, equally surprised.
“Listen, it’s really simple: just set up a meeting with your friend Chanyeol. I want to meet him!” I insisted, the urgency in my tone unmistakable.
“Wait, really? I’ll call him right now! He’ll be so excited! What changed your mind, Ha Sun?” he asked, the enthusiasm in his voice bubbling over.
“Just don’t ask me any more questions,” I retorted swiftly, not wanting to dive into the depths of my thoughts.
“Okay, okay, I’ll call him,” he replied before the line went dead in my ears. Later that day, Min Nyuk pinged me with a message announcing that our rendezvous would take place at the café where he worked. How serendipitous that it was just a stone's throw away from my place!
“I really should apologize to Min Nyuk for my earlier outburst,” I thought, annoyance bubbling within.
After a brief ten-minute journey—time spent bracing myself for this unexpected meet—I finally arrived at the café. As I stepped inside, a figure approached me. To say he looked different would be an understatement; something about him radiated an allure that captivated my attention. He settled into the seat opposite me, a bright smile illuminating his face.
“Long time no see, Ha Sun,” he greeted, his demeanor surprisingly calm in contrast to my nervous energy.
“Are you Chanyeol? Pardon my confusion, but do we know each other?” I asked, genuine bewilderment lacing my words.
“Wow, do you really not remember me?” he replied, a hint of playful disbelief shimmering in his eyes.
“I’m sorry! My memory isn’t the sharpest when it comes to faces. But we must have crossed paths at some point, right?” I chuckled awkwardly, rubbing my forehead as if trying to jog my memory.
“Forget it; if you did remember, you’d probably be upset,” he remarked with a sly, cynical grin that definitely didn’t help alleviate the tension I felt.
What an enigma. Right off the bat, his charm was already starting to wear thin on me, and I couldn’t shake the question that echoed in my mind: had Min Nyuk been right to say this guy was impressed by my sketches?
“I wouldn’t exactly call our introduction a triumph, but honestly, I’m curious about why you liked my sketches. Based on today’s first impressions, I’m having a hard time believing you genuinely appreciate them,” I pointedly countered, a small laugh escaping me to mask my discomfort.
“Oh, I never claimed to be in total awe of your work. Initially, I assumed you had a talent for capturing everything perfectly, but after seeing your sketches yesterday, I realized they were just objects devoid of any other element—kinda boring, if I’m honest,” he critiqued, his ability to deliver sharp barbs without missing a beat quite impressive.
Wow, a bit harsh, don’t you think?
“I focus on the essence of my subjects; to me, adding extraneous details can take away from the message. They’re good sketches—worth more than you might think,” I shot back, a sardonic smile creeping across my lips as a defensive wall formed inside me.
