"When are you going to stop running?
This is who you are. You can't run
from yourself "

Adeline

I wasn't sure what to expect, but it certainly wasn't this. I was in the kitchen talking quietly to joseph and Laura, while Maurice was in the living room.
I didn't understand why her abilities weren't manifesting they way they should've, but now I do. Her parents had her on wolfsbane. A substance lethal to wolves in large doses, but if taken in small increments can cancel out the abilities of a wolf, essentially turning them human. But there are major repercussions for that, because wolfsbane is a poison. I drew my attention back to Laura and Joseph.
"So is it possible that she has built up a tolerance for it? I mean she said her parents had her taking it ever since she 'turned into a demon.' Why would they lie to her anyway? I mean they clearly knew she was a wolf, why would they convince her she's a demon?" Joseph asked, looking at me. I shook my head.
"I have no idea. But one things for certain, we can't allow this to continue. She's not safe here." I told them, I thought for a moment and continued, "Joseph go find out all you can on the Holden's. I want to know everything there is on these people. See if they have any connection to the hunters in the area. Meanwhile I need to call my father and tell him what we found out. Then we need to get back to the pack." Joseph nodded and started to turn to go but Laura stopped him.
She looked back into the living room, as if trying to find out of Maurice could hear us or not.
"No, Adeline. I normally wouldn't question you, but right now Maurice needs you. She's spent her entire life thinking she's a demon and has been forced to consume poison on a daily basis that blocks her inner wolf. You are her friend, the only she's ever had, mind you. Comfort her. Call your father, stay here. Let us deal deal with this, That poor girl has probably been sitting there thinking we hate her for the last ten minutes. We need to get our things straight, and she needs to know what she really is or else she won't leave with us." Laura explained to me. She was right, I couldn't leave. I missed once, to let her know that I agreed.
Joseph groaned, "Why can't we just take her and leave? I mean cmon we've been her long enough, it's too warm. I wanna go back home to Alaska, you know, where there aren't hunters everywhere you turn?" Joseph said.
      Laura looked at him incredulously.
"She still has parents you Idiot. We're trying to keep our existence a secret, not get arrested for kidnapping. And quit complaining, this is our fault to begin with. It's our pack that forget about her. Now GO." She said angerly. When Joseph was out the door, she put her hand on my shoulder and guided me to the living room.
I knew what she trying to do, but even pathokinesis can't help not knowing what to say to her.
Laura is truly an amazing person, I can never hid my feeling from her. And not just because of her abilities. Both Laura and Joseph are masters of empathy and emotional manipulation. It's called pathokinesis, but it's limited to people their touching or are really close by, aside from each other. They always know what the other is feeling.
Abilities like theirs are in our world aren't uncommon, but their not common either. Twins always have some sort of ability, just like they always have pure white fur. They share an inner wolf, Laura says it's like always being on the phone with someone. She said that if joseph were to die she wasn't sure that she'd be able to handle it. Of course extra abilities like theirs can happen to regular wolves, but it rarely ever happens. We have a 27 person pack and only five of them have anything special.
Maurice was sitting on the couch with her head in her hands. She looked like she was crying. It hurt me to see her like this. I cared so much for her and I didn't know why. I just wanted to make all of her problems go away.  Maybe it was because she's my responsibility to protect and I've failed at that for 16 years.
I looked at Laura and pointed my head towards Maurice, and she went over to sit by her. I took the chair directly in front of her, she didn't say anything. I wondered what she thinking right now, did she really believe that we would hate her?
"Maurice, I want you to know that-" I didn't even get a sentence out before she started rambling on about how she wasn't evil and she can fight the demon. It was truly saddening, a proud werewolf, reduced to this. Begging for forgiveness for something that she was born with, for something she can't help.
"Stop... No no no, Maurice you've got this all wrong. We're not -" She interrupted me again.
"Please Adeline believe me... I can't...  I'm not... " She sobbed. I tried again but everytime I talked she just talked louder. She kept shaking Laura hand off so she wasn't any help with that. Besides I don't think she could've helped much anyway. Laura's empathy would be making her feel every single emotion in this room right now, including all of Maurice's. And Maurice's was having a breakdown.
Eventually I got tired of this. I grabbed Maurice and made her stand up with me. I yelled for her to stop and when she didn't, I flashed my eyes. My bright red eyes, sign of the alpha wolf. Me doing this made Laura flash her yellow eyes, because that's just how things work. Maurice was taken aback. She tried to take a step backwards, but she ran into Laura.
"Adeline..." Laura cautioned. I took a deep breath and calmed myself down. I have a little bit of a temper. My eyes reverted back to normal, and Maurice fell down onto the couch.
"Jesus M. You're not a demon, you're a freaking werewolf. " I told her. She just responded with,  "Huh?"
"You, are a werewolf. So am I. We're not circus kids, and we're here for you." I said exasperated.
She just shook her head, standing back up.
"N-no no no werewolves aren't real... they,  they-they can't be. That that's not how things work. Right? Tell me I'm right.  Adeline!" She rambled
"Maurice Holden, You just saw my eyes change to a different colour. You transform into a wolf every full moon. Those pills you have in there, it's called wolfsbane. It's a poison. We have Claws... Look me in the eyes  and tell me one more time we're wolves aren't real." I told her, sounding eerily like A mother scolding a child.
She just looked at us. From me to Laura and back to me. She opened her mouth and tried to say something but the words wouldn't come out.
"Wh- but... Du- uh... Claws!????" She finally managed. I smirked, and made mine come out. Her eyes grew wide at the sight. Laura sat down next to her and wrapped her arms around her shoulders.
"Adeline. We're supper to be explaining this to her not giving her a heart attack." she said making a face of disapproval. I was about respond when my phone rang. It was my father. I stepped out of the room and went to answer it.
My father wasn't happy. He wanted me to take Maurice directly to him, saying that there was something really really wrong with this whole picture. Halfway through telling me to take her to him, he changed his mind.
"The hunters... Adeline don't move. Stay there. Well be there soon. I don't want you to be out alone. The Blackwell's will be there soon." He told me. I said okay and went to hang up.
"Oh and adeline?" My father voice said through the phone.
     "Yes?" I questioned.
"Good job." He thanked me. We hung up and I put my phone back into my pocket.
By the time the 6 minute call was over, maurice looked better. That probably had to do with Laura being there to talk her though everything and call her down.
"So?" she asked, making Maurice look at us questioningly. I leaned against the door frame.
"We wait. Your parents are coming to get us and bring us back to camp. That way he can see her. He says it's not safe to be out alone " I told Laura.
"Wait see who? What are you talking about?" Maurice questioned, standing up.
"Her father. Cmon sit back down. " Laura said pulling back down gently.
"Why!? You people have yet to explain anything!" Maurice exclaimed.
I looked over at the front door, then back at the two girls sitting down.
"Because he's the alpha." I said pointedly.
We sat in silence for a a while, with Laura periodically putting her hands around Maurice, for what I assume is to calm the girl down. When the doorbell rang Maurice jumped.
"Let's go. "  I told them. Maurice, unwilling to go anywhere wouldn't move. I sighed and pulled her up. I started dragging her to the door, perks of werewolf strength.
She complained about my grip and kept  protesting, saying she don't want to go see my father or the camp.
"M, I thought you wanted answers. I'm about to give them to you, you just have to calm down/and be patient okay? Can you do that?" I asked. She thought for a second and nodded her head and stopped pulling. We walked to car and got in.
Maurice didn't look at any of us the whole ride. Whenever Laura tried to touch her she pulled away. We set up camp deep in the woods, I mean where else would we?
We stepped out of the car and Maurice got out but she stopped moving. I sighed and went to convince her everything was okay, but then she fainted. Catching her, Laura said everything was fine.
"Let's just get her to your dad before everyone else sees her. I don't think she could deal with meeting the rest of the pack right now. " She said, putting Maurice's arm around her shoulder And started towards my fathers trailer.
I said thank you to Laura's parents and went go face the music. All of our lives are about to change...
