Chapter 3 - How Come Nobody Knows How To Speak Latin?!

I joined Riley and we walked side by side through the hallways and I spent most of the time trying not to stare at all the people. There wasn't even a third of the amount of people here who homeschooled.

But after a few seconds, we were stopped by a girl. She had obviously dyed blonde hair, eyes that were covered in blue contacts, and a face that looked as though it had been shoved with a cream pie. Except the pie had been made with 100% makeup.

She put a hand on Riley's chest, not even acknowledging me. She batted her long, mascara soaked eyelashes that were surely impossible to hold up and smiled flirtatiously at him. "Hey Riley."

Riley rolled his eyes and took her hand off his chest, but she immediately placed it back on as she pouted. "You should come hang with us. We could have so much fun."

After a moment I realized what she meant, and I almost gagged.

Riley snorted, not even bothering to be polite. "No thanks Eva."

She glared at him. "Why would you still stay with those stupid friends of yours when you have a spot in this group? The elite squad. The alpha's."

Riley's eyes flashed. "You let nearly anyone in who fits your vague criteria. My friends actually have standards."

She sighed. "But you really should join us... you belong here, not with those..." she searched for the right word. "...people."

"No thanks. I think I'll stick with those people." He practically spat the last word.

Eva seemed to notice me at that moment. She looked shock, but then her expression twisted into anger. "This is why you don't like me? You aren't interested in me as more than an acquaintance because of this... thing? She isn't even pretty! Why the hell would you like her?"

Riley glared at Eva, not even bothering to answer as he grabbed my elbow and pulled me through the group of girls who seemed to be friends with Eva. They all gave me heated glares, but I refused to back down. So I stared right back at them, and they seemed utterly shocked at it.

I grinned inwardly in triumph. Finally, we made it through them.

Riley let out a breath. "Sorry. Eva had been trying to get me to like her for almost a year now. I'm sick of it." He scowled, his eyes flashing in anger. "And of the way she talks about my friends. Like they're nothing."

I feel a pang of sympathy for him but grinned widely. "Well, you acted better than I would've. I would've punched her in the face if she spoke bad about my friends. But that's probably not the best thing to do on my first day of school."

Riley snorted. "Of course you would, Calla. And I hope you don't listen to a word that bitch says." I winced visibly at the swear word, and he frowned. "What is it? You didn't actually take what she said to heart, right?"

I shook my head, even though it was a half lie. "No, it's just swearing and I don't really bond that well."

Riley laughed. "Sorry. I'll keep that in mind when I'm around you."

I smiled. "Thanks."

We stepped into the cafeteria, and I gasped. I've never been in a school cafeteria before. Strangely, the first thing I thought of was the cafeteria from High School Musical. It was similar. A huge room down the bottom and stairs leading up to a higher seating place. Almost every table was taken, and Riley headed straight for the middle.

I frowned, but follow him. "No food?"

Riley glanced at me. "We have food at our table. We buy a few scoops of hot chips for the morning tea break, and then have pizza for lunch. We always get pizza on a Monday. You'll learn in due time."
