John's POV
Over time Alex and I got closer. We bonded over late night discussions and over visits to the coffee shop where we might be accompanied by Herc or Laf. I learned that Alex's favorite color was blue and that lions were his favorite animals. I learned that his dream was to graduate and enter politics.
He would often tell me wistfully late at night while we were binge-watching Netflix, "John I wanna build something that's gonna outlive me." I also learned that Alex was attached to his laptop the way a little girl is attached to her doll. He often pulled all-nighters cranking out essay after essay until the next morning I would find him napping on his laptop force pressing the letter 'f'.
Along with our friendship, my feelings for him also grew stronger. Lafayette and Hercules still urged me to ask him out. I just couldn't. I didn't want to mess up our friendship. The last time I confessed to a guy I ended up alone in an alley and crying. I couldn't bring myself to go through that again. So I kept my mouth shut and smiled and laughed with Hamilton as time went on. The weather in New York City got colder as October rolled around. School got busier but most students brightened at the prospect of Halloween around the corner.
"So what are you gonna be for Halloween?", I asked Alex. We had just finished our final class of the month, and students rushed to prepare their costumes.
"Can I tell you something and can you not laugh?", he said as we walked out into the cold air and made our way to our dorm.
"What is it?", I replied curiously.
"I've never celebrated Halloween. Where I grew up, It was never custom to celebrate it.", he said.
"You've never celebrated Halloween?", I said incredulously as we entered our room.
"Yeah, no.", he admitted as he rubbed his neck. He blushed as I stared.
"Well everyone dresses up as whatever they want to be for one night, and goes out, in some instances to trick or treats for candy, or in others to party.", I explained as I shrugged off my coat. "It's a lot of fun!"
"Well I don't know if I would be able to decide on something and I also don't think I'd be very good at making a costume.", Alex pondered as he put away his hat.
"Alex put that hat back on and follow me I have an idea.", I exclaimed as I clutched his hand and rushed out the door.Alex's POV
I follow John as he ran from our dorm out into the frosty October air. I looked at my watch. It was already after 6. I wondered where he was taking me. We made a right at the coffee shop and made a mad dash towards the dorms on the other side of the college. John burst inside and knocked on room 46.
"Who is it??", a female's voice rang from the other side.
"It's me John!", John panted, as he leaned against the wall.
"Peggy, let him in!", I heard another voice from inside. The door opened to reveal a young girl dressed in yellow pajamas. She had skin the color of chocolate, big dark eyes, and curly brown hair.
"John!", she exclaimed as she gave him a hug. I felt a pang of.....jealousy? What?
"Come in, both of you!", she says as she pulled us inside. We walked in and saw Halloween preparations in full swing. Two other girls, one clad in blue pajamas with light skin and dark hair the other in pink with dark skin and hair were busy hanging up orange and black decorations wherever there was room.
"Guys, I'd like you to meet my roommate and friend, Alex", John said.
I smiled somewhat uncomfortably.
"Hi.", I said shyly. The girls looked at one another. The one in the pink who seemed to be the oldest of the group spoke up.
"My name is Angelica Schuyler. I'm a sophomore.", she said her hands on her hips.
"I'm Eliza. I'm a freshman.", the one in blue said softly.
"And I'm Peggy! I'm also a freshman but I skipped 2 years of grade school.", the one in yellow chimed in. She smiled knowingly at John.
"Wait, John is the guy you were talking me about who you said was super cu-" John immediately cut Peggy off by saying, "Anyways, I'm here so you can work your costume magic on Alex.
"Sure.", Angelica said. "What are we turning him into...".
John leaned over and whispered into her ear.
"Really?", she asked. "Well, you're lucky I work miracles."
"And keep it a surprise. I don't want him to see till you're finished.", he added slyly.
"Wait! I didn't-", I was cut off as the sisters whisked me away. I heard John laughing as I protested.
