"I need you both to be supportive of (Y/N), we need to keep her occupied she's not been doing well since her parents... passing." Maryse schooled as she hurried to the portal doors, Izzy and Alec in her wake. The portal doors opened and you stepped through, the last box of your things that hadn't been sent over all ready clutched in your hands.

"Thank you for letting me stay Mrs lightwood." You mutter. She inclines her head, accepting your thanks, and leads you to your room.

"We can help you..." Izzy started to offer to help unpack but you slowly shut the door on the siblings, thanking them for the offer quietly. "Well that was rude." Izzy snapped.

"Izzy she lost her parents last month, she's not going to feel like partying with you." Alec glanced at Izzy who nodded.

"I guess you right but you'd think she'd rather be around people." Izzy muttered as she headed to her own room, keeping the door open in case you wanted to find her.

Alec stopped outside your door, wondering if this time you'd accept his offer to join the gang on a mission, it had been months since you moved into the New York institute and you left your room so rarely that the only way they knew you were still there, was because the occasional visits Maryse set up with brother Zachariah.

"You know she's not going to come; why do you bother asking her?" Jace asked as he left his room and joined his parabati in staring at your bedroom door.

"I don't know... if she started coming out of her room Mother would feel less inclined to fuss over her all the time and would worry less." Alec muttered. You heard both boys walk away, sighing, you decided to head towards the kitchen and get back to your room before anyone noticed.

On your way back to your room a young boy throwing a book down the steps leading to the main room of the institute caught your attention. You picked it up for him and handed it to the boy, who looked up at you curiously.

"I'm Max." He smiled and seemed to wait for you to respond.

"Oh... I'm (Y/N), you need any help... I kinda aced my rune tests." You grinned at him, your heart soaring at the happy smile he returned. It had been months of people saying they were sorry for your loss and feeling awkward around you but this little Shadowhunter seemed to want your company which was a happy change.

"I'm still struggling with the nourishment Rune," He grumbled.

"Well what's causing your problems?" You smiled and took out your stele, opening his book and running your fingers over the delicate paper designed to withstand rune practise.

"I get it confused with the heat rune." You couldn't help but giggle at him but you quickly gained your composure.

"They look nothing alike but... maybe we should start with fireproof." You suggested. He smiled and watched you carefully draw out the swirling rune, after you drew it out you handed him your stele, letting him copy the rune occasionally guiding his hand.

"Max what are you doing, stop bothering (Y/N)!" Izzy hurried over, scooping her brother into her arms and smiling apologetically before hurrying away with him.

"Sorry, he's only just come back from training overseas." Alec hurried over and gathered Max's things, almost taking your stele with him, he handed it back and followed his sister.

You sighed, having enjoyed the short time teaching Max, no doubt they would start pandering over you again like you were a tiny delicate flower. Maybe that's what you were, small, delicate and in need of protection.

Alec watch you train with fascination. He'd seen you shuffling down the corridor and followed you from the living quarters to the training room, now you were in front of him, tears streaming down your face as you moved at a speed that rivalled Jace.

"Your amazing." He muttered, you span to face him, dropping your blade and hurrying to put it away. "Hey, I'm sorry I just..." He tried to stop you but you span past him, avoiding his outstretched hand.

"I'm sorry I just wanted to be alone." You whispered as tears began to form in your eyes.

"By the angel will you stop you're stupidly fast!" Alec called out softly and hurried after you, gripping your hand and stopping you. "look I get that you want to be alone but if you do feel like coming out of your room and hanging around we won't mind." His smiled was friendly and you nodded.

"Thanks." You muttered shyly. He nodded at you and let you go back to your room.

"Hey Max, how's your rune study's going?" You ask as he walked past you with a happy smile.

"Alec got my stele back when I showed him I knew the fireproof rune." He grinned and showed it to you. "I'm going to work on another one in the library, you want to come?" He held his books out to you with a hopeful glint in his eyes.

"Sure, let's go!" you grin happily. Neither of you noticed Alec smiling and retrieving his mother from her office.

You smiled as Max watched you trace out his new rune, understanding because Izzy told him he needed to understand more about other people, and drew it out several times with an ordinary pen just in case he got it wrong.

"How's this one?" He asked quickly, jabbing a finger at the book on his lap.

"Perfect Maxie, well done." He grinned at you and happily took up his stele to prove he could draw it properly.

"(Y/N), I'm glad to see you smiling again... and to think that teaching Max was the thing that cheered you up." Maryse smiled as she and Alec entered the library, inspecting Max's work.

"I'm impressed you got him to learn a rune this fast." Alec was looking from you to Max's book with a shocked look of awe.

"Oh well thanks it was nothing." You mumble quickly as he smiled at you.

"It's not nothing, you're a pretty incredible Shadowhunter." Alec grinned and looked to his mother who nodded in agreement.

"Alec has volunteered to train with you and I would be honoured if you would help max with his study's." Maryse waited for you to answer, smiling when you agreed, Max followed his mother out of the room so that he could tell her about what he was learning.

"I hope you didn't mind her begin so abrupt... he (Y/N) what's wrong?" He frowned and took a seat next to you when tears began to stream down your cheeks.

"I don't think I can do it... my mother was teaching me to become a tutor, she was at the school in Idris as a tutor." He wrapped his arms around your shoulder as you burst into tears and began sobbing uncontrollably.

"Hey (Y/N) listen to me, you are an amazing Shadowhunter and you'll be a great tutor." He rubbed your arms gently, letting you sob into his shoulder. "It's ok to be sad angel, you lost the most important people to you, well work through it just promise you won't hide away when your sad."

"Why does it matter, I only get in the way and I'm not even that good at anything." You whispered. Alec lifted your chin so he could look you in the eyes and couldn't find the words to tell you what he was feeling.

"You're going to be fine, just wait and see." He Smiled and left you to mull things over.
