I swear it was an accident. How was I supposed to know that the lever would have opened the tank? Honestly, it was the aquarium's fault, not mine; they left that tiny, little, tempting lever unsupervised. And as an ADHD kid, I just had to know what it was there for. Well, it turns out it was the epitome good and bad, the good being that we avoided the rest of the boring school trip and got a good swim, the bad being me getting expelled.Oh, right, I forgot to introduce myself: I'm Pierce Jackson, currently 11 years old and living with my mom, Sally Jackson, and stepdad, Smelly Gabe, more formally known as Gabe Ugliano. Am I a problematic child? I guess you could say so. This is like what? The fifth time I've been expelled? Yeah, I'm no goody two shoes.
Ah, yeah, messed up family, messed up child. You saw 'stepdad', right? Are you wondering who my real dad is? Truth be told, even I don't know. My mom told me he was lost at sea, that's all the information I could get out of her. She won't tell me anything else, other than me looking a lot like him in terms of hair and eyes. If I ask her anything else she just gazes out of the window and says "one day I'll tell you everything you need to know".
She remarried to Gabe, who quite frankly is the worst human being alive. He's vile, disgusting, putrid,, rancid; the list goes on. Why would my awesome mother marry a man like that? I've got no clue. I mean she's beautiful; brown hair, blue eyes. And him? Just picture the biggest beer gut ever, a bald head and slap pizza grease all over his clothes and face: there's the portrait. I wish I looked more like my mom, someone who had a warm smile and whose eyes would twinkle whenever she laughed. I only looked like her face wise. I got different features: different hair, different eyes and different skin tone
And right now, here I was, staring at a Gandalf wannabe. At least the beard looked impressive, I wish I could grow a beard? Would I need to shampoo and comb it too?
Off subject. Sorry.
It started off as a normal morning. I got up, took a quick shower, grabbed the nearest clothes around me and headed to the kitchen for breakfast. It was summer and I was planning on going jogging, that way I could escape Smelly Gabe for at least an hour. I would hang out with friends, but nobody wants to hang with the weird girl, right?
When I entered the kitchen, Gabe wasn't there. Surprise, surprise. But guess who was there? My mom and the Gandalf looking dude.
And I almost fell to the floor, but ended up settling on hysterically laughing.
"Oh my god, that's an amazing costume there! Where did you get it?" I wiped a tear that was rolling down my cheek. Then realization hit me.
"Who are you?"
Long beard guy chuckled, his blue eyes twinkling.
"I'm Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts."
Dude's got a British accent, cool. Wait, Hogwarts? What's that? Was that the actual name of a school? No way. That's actually kind of gross. Just picture I school of hogs covered with warts. I shivered.
"Umm, is that another school for troubled kids?" I asked.
"Oh no, Pierce. It's a school for special children who are different than others." He said, amusement laced in his voice.
Special? That's what they all say. They won't accept me there. The second I'd step foot in there, they'll change; they all do. I don't trust adults anymore, only my mom. I looked over to my mom, she was smiling, but her eyes were holding an unidentified emotion.
"Pierce, dear," she started, "I've never been normal, and neither have you. I never told you about your grandparents, have I? They were wizards, Pierce. Their names were Walburga and Orion Black. My mother was a witch and my father was a wizard. They were what you would call Purebloods. I was their biggest shame, a squib. I could not perform magic. When I was eleven and did not receive my letter from Hogwarts, they sent me to an orphanage here in America; never to be seen again. I invited Albus here so that you could go to Hogwarts. Pierce, your name was on the book; you're a witch."
I stared at her dumbfounded. Witch? Pureblood? Black? Hogwarts again? Book? WITCH?! Mom started crying.
"You are my daughter, Pierce Black, last heiress of the Black family."
I looked back at Albus, he held out a hand to me. "Shall we go get your supplies?"
