Melanie's POV:

"If you're going to stay in my office during your free period then at least share your food with me." Dad holds his hand out, expectedly.

I pop another chip in my mouth, savoring the barbecue taste. "You never share your food with me." Dad gives me a pointed look.

"Fine. I will give you some if you let me skip school on Monday." I lift my boots up on his desk, crossing my ankles.

   "No."

I pop another chip in my mouth. "Skip two periods because you need my help with something and I really just chill in here on tumblr."

"Just give me some chips." Dad stretches over his desk, fingers too far away.

I dangle the bag inches away from his demanding fingers. "One period?"

He slams his palm on his desk. "Fine! Just give me the food. I haven't ate all day."

"Calm down." I smile and hand the bag over. "No reason to yell."

Dad snatches the bag out of my hand, falling back in his chair. "Too damn much like me."

"That's why you love me." I make a heart with both of my hands. He rolls his eyes, stuffing his mouth with chips.

The school day is over and instead of catching a ride home with Darla, I wanted to spend some time with my dad. I don't have to worry about waiting until lacrosse practice is over because they didn't have it today. Something that I don't understand because they should be preparing for the first game on Friday.

"You and Darla are...you know?" Dad struggles to ask, afraid to set me off.

"Yes." I slide my phone out of my pocket with two fingers. "We are talking again. No need to lock me out of my own house again."

Dad avoids my pointed glare. "It worked, didn't it?"

I open my mouth to retort, but stop when someone knocks on the closed, office door. Dad stops eating and waves his hand at whoever is outside. I tilt my head to the side to see Scott awkwardly shuffle in the office. Dad drops the chips on his desk, like he wasn't just stuffing his face.

"What do you need, McCall?" Dad brushes the crumbs off of his hands.

Scott glances over at me then back to my dad. "I need to talk about the game tomorrow night. I can't play."

Dad stands up and walks in front of his desk next to my feet. I take back my chips. This is going to be good. The last time someone tried to miss a game, they were kicked off of the team and we lost the game because of them. Now, everyone hates Brent Wood.

"What do you mean, you can't play the game tomorrow night?" Dad crosses his arms as if he could be intimidating.

"I mean–I can't play the game tomorrow night."

Why would he not want to play the game? He's actually made first line and now he wants to miss it?

"You can't wait to play the game tomorrow night." Dad stresses.

Scott shakes his head. "No, coach, I can't play the game tomorrow night."

Dad scrunches his face up. "I'm not following."

Scott looks at me from his peripheral vision. "I'm having some personal issues."

Personal issues? Does this have to do with why he ditched Darla? May I add, that I don't fully forgive him for ditching her. One, she's my best friend and doesn't deserve that. Two, that whole night just pisses me off.
