Darla’s POV
By Tuesday I still hadn’t heard from Scott, despite my obvious attempts to talk to him. Melanie and I are fine now, except for the usual glare from my best friend when someone asks where we ran off to during the party. “So, practice or no?” Melanie asks me, tossing a pecan in her mouth. I nod my head to answer her, letting my curls fall into my face for a fraction of a second before I push them behind my ear once more.
“Yeah, Danny asked me to come today for some reason. He said it was vitally important.” My face scrunches up in confusion, but I continue to walk towards the lacrosse fields anyway.
“Why on Earth is it vitally important to watch him get balls thrown at him?” Melanie swings her lanyard around and around.
I shrug to answer. “Perhaps he wants more money or something.”
“Did you ever give him any?”
I give my best friend a ludicrous look. “Hell no!” I laugh loudly, pushing the doors to the fields open and ushering Melanie faster when I notice practice started already.
We laugh the whole time it takes to reach the bleachers and we finally sit down. By then the team is lined up in the center of the field, working on getting past a defender, who happens to be Jackson.
“McCall!” Coach Finstock yells at Scott and he seems out-of-it, staring off into space. “What’re you waiting for? Let’s go!” I bite my lip as Scott takes off down the field, only to be pushed down by Jackson.
I ignore Coach’s remarks to Scott to talk to Melanie. “Your dad seems to be just Mr. Chipper today, all happy and excited and nice.” I sarcastically tell his daughter. Melanie rolls her eyes, but doesn’t say anything else.
“McCall’s going to do it again! McCall’s going to do it again!” Coach sings clamorously, speed walking back down the field. I watch anxiously, aware of Scott’s ambition to top Jackson, and Coach.
Scott rushes down the field, slamming into Jackson hard, knocking him to the ground instantly. They both fly to the ground, Jackson cradling his shoulder, Scott his head. I gasp loudly, standing from my seat on the bleacher and running out to the field. Before I could reach Scott, or Jackson, he is gone and Jackson’s surrounded by other lacrosse players.
“Outta’meh way!” I hear Melanie tell the beasts of boy in front of us. She pushes kids out of the way so we’re standing beside Coach and Danny. Coach Finstock is ushering people back from Jackson and my eyes widen when I take in his appearance. He looks like he’s in a lot of pain.
I look up, past the faces of the worried lacrosse players and past the bleachers of equally worried people to see a man standing and watching us. He catches my eye and I feel my heart beat quicken. He gives me a nod and turns to walk away.
I look back down quickly, laying Jackson’s head in my lap as Coach calls for an ambulance.

I got home about an hour and a half after the Jackson incident. Scott and Stiles weren’t seen again. Danny insisted I rode with him on the way home and being the awesome sister I am, I told him to piss off and rushed to Melanie’s car. He’d yelled back at me, possibly about the swear jar, but it wasn’t very effective. Melanie and I laughed at Danny’s ridiculously angry face the entire way back to my house.
When we did get home, I apologized to Danny, but only because my mom made me do it. “Mom! Please, just let us go?” I beg my mother pitiful, attempting to get away quickly. Mom sighed, setting the Uno cards back down on the kitchen table and nodding her head sadly. “Thank you! Merci! Gracias!” I spit out ‘thank you’ in three quick languages and drag Melanie’s arm all the way down the hall to my room.
