Darla's POV
My mind swirls, but I continue to watch the trees rush by the road and the white line zoom alongside us. Stiles drives with a strange nervousness, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel and taking glances at the clock, (it's taped to his dashboard since his old jeep didn't have a built in one) illuminating the small atmosphere. Nearly getting sick at watching several green, oxygen-pooping giants flash through my vision I turn my gaze away.
Is something wrong with Scott, as to explain why he'd suddenly turned fidgety and taken off? Maybe he got sick, like I sometimes did? Did I do something wrong? A mistake unnoticed by myself? Perhaps he forgot to pick up his mom, or something? No, he'd tell me and he wouldn't have left without a reason why.
For a strange reason all I can think about is the fact that I'm not mad, but upset. I'm sure he's heard all about Michael and his antics, hasn't he? Even if he hadn't, he still wouldn't have left me. Something serious must really be wrong. I sneak a glance at Stiles; his face is flushed and his lip almost looks as if it's about to bleed from him biting it too hard. He catches me staring at him and he twitches in his seat, about to say something.
"Did, uh, you," Stiles reaches up and scratches his chin then rubs a hand over his buzz cut. "um, did you see where Melanie, uh, ran off too?" My eyes widen considerably, realization hitting me like a ton of bricks, maybe even an entire herd of elephants trampling the ground towards me.
"Holy shit!" I scream, making Stiles jump and nearly run off the side of the road. I cling onto the passenger side door for support.
"What?" Stiles voice is even higher in volume and he rocks in his seat, more nervous and anxious for my reply.
I'd totally left Melanie at the party, without an explanation to her as to why I left! I was too caught up with finding out where Scott was running off to, to notice Melanie's confused expression as I rushed after my date. The last I'd seen of her was watching her pull out of the driveway after a black Camaro.
"Melanie- I-I totally, oh my- shit! I'm such an asshole! Oh my gosh, I'm such a freakin' bitch! I-" Stiles cuts me from my rambling and I snap my head up to him, strangling my tight curls. There's no way in Hell I actually left her without an explanation! I'd actually looked her in the eyes. I'm such a horrible friend!
"You did what?" When I don't answer, Stiles takes an arm over the middle seat, shaking me. "Darla! Where's Melanie?" His voice is high, his face panicked.
"I-I'm sure s-she's fine!" I say in a shaky breath, utterly confused why I'd say she's fine. She must have been going home anyways, probably mad at me or something. I've never ditched her, she's never ditched me. I'm not sure if she's mad at me or if she's nothing at all. We've fought more than normal best friends, but only true friends fight, right?
"Darla, where'd Melanie go?" Stiles looks down at me as if I'm a child that doesn't understand the problem I caused. I'm starting to feel like that child though.
"I-I don't know!" I confess, banging my head against the window sadly, on the verge of tears. The emotional meltdown is confusing me, but what's been running through my head is the cause of this trauma. The startling departure of Scott, disrespecting Melanie, and now nearly having panic attack is not helping my case.
Not being able to run from my problems this time is rough and all I want to do is to make sure Scott is okay and apologize to Melanie.
"Did you see where she went?" Stiles' voice is loud still and his temple seems to be pulsing faster than normal.
"She pulled out of the driveway after a black Camaro." I state, lifting my head to judge Stiles' reaction. He stops at a red light, sliding in his seat and his face falls. "Is she following that car?" I ask, perking up in my seat. What if she went nuts at me and decided to take out her anger on some poor victim in a nice car?
