Darla’s POV

“Now I understand you not wanting, err not able to talk about it last night, but you still have to tell me everything that happened, from the moment you left me to the moment we left together. Got it?”

I look over to my best friend and nod enthusiastically. I couldn’t tell Melanie everything last night about the kiss between Scott and I, because I was too shocked and giddy to answer hardly anything. I can barely speak without some form of excitement coming from my mouth now.

“Okay, well, when we won I ran after Scott, who was running towards the school. Um, ha, okay- Darla, calm down, okay, well, I-”

“Your story telling skills suck. Get on with it!” Melanie pulls into the school parking lot, finding a parking spot and killing the engine. She takes her belt off and looks at me expectantly, shifting in her seat.

“Um, well, here’s the confusing/scary part.” I bite my lip, attempting to form the words in my head before blurting them out.

“Darla, please, just hurry up or I’m going to scream.”

“Okay, fine. Sorry, gosh. Anyways, it felt like someone was watching me. Like, I went to the locker room, because that’s where I thought he went. He’d thrown his helmet out in the hall. When I was about to walk in there was this big crash, like glass breaking.” I rub my hands against my thighs, my heart rate picking up thinking of the frightening moments.

“What? Really?” I nod to her. “I didn’t see anything when I was in there- well, I was kind of focused on you and Scott and-” Melanie shakes her head as I continue, oblivious to Melanie’s own thoughts.

“Anyways, I walked in and I swear, Mel, something was watching me. I looked around and didn’t see anything. I called out Scott’s name, but he didn’t respond. I found a broken mirror, too. I heard heavy breathing and everything. I was actually scared and not curious.” I look at my best friend with wide eyes.

She knows I’m scared when I didn’t want to go after something I couldn’t explain.

“I mean, I’m freaking alone!” I start to use hand motions and Melanie’s eyes wide in amusement, but I ignore her. “He was in the freaking shower- not naked or anything, thank god, maybe. I don’t know,” I giggle endlessly till I feel a harsh slap to my arm. I stop and pout towards me friend. “Ow.”

“The kiss, please, get to the kiss, or we’ll be late!” Melanie looks at the time on her phone.

“Okay, well, I kept telling him congratulations. Melanie- he apologized! Then said he wanted a second chance, so I was all smooth and gaped at him.” I frown from my stupidity as Melanie laughs out loud. “He said I was cute and he kissed me!”

“Then we ran, yeah, but you gaped at him?” Melanie smacks her leg as she laughs, leaning her head back at my pain.

I groan. “I know, like, open mouth, but at least I had a French lesson.” I wink, which causes her to laugh harder, before declaring it time to leave the safe haven of the car.

“Okay, okay, let’s go.”

I open my door and get bumped into by crowds of people heading towards the back side of the school. I look over the car and into Melanie’s hazel gaze. Her eyebrows are squished together and I crack a grin. “Let’s go!” I laugh, meeting her at the front of the car and grabbing her elbow, wheeling her towards the crowd.

We walk around the building till we come to the school’s private bus garage. Police officers swarm the area, investigators and crime scene detectives take photos and gather evidence. A school bus sits, windows broken and doors ajar. Blood-caked hand prints litter the ground and bus interior. The back emergency exit is nearly ripped off its hinges.
