The blanket did little to protect from the cold, but I think it's more for the shock. I held the left side of the blanket firmly around my arms, moving closer to Baz who occupied the other end of the blanket. His head hung low, his shoulders looked as if they held the weight of anvils. All of the rage, adrenaline and pain he had fed on had worn off, leaving Baz with a heavy pain, an effect of over-using his magic. I knew the feeling all too well, like the taste of burning lingering in your mouth, the smell of smoke filling your nose and a hollow feeling in your stomach.

I peered across the trees to where Penny was, she was standing across from her mother, Mia sat between them on the ground with a blanket of her own. The other mages wandered around chattering. I overheard some of them say that a few of the vampires had fled just as they had arrived.

I moved my arm around Baz's waist, resting my head on his shoulder. I didn't want to talk, not just yet, and I could tell that neither did he. So, we sat in silence staring into the blue gloom of the forest.
