I walk beside Lewis the next morning, and I sigh.
"What if we can't find him. What if Martyn died, back up at the top of that waterfall? What if Zoey died alone." I say quietly and Lewis looks at me.
"I don't think that happened. Think, Zoey's necklace was gone, and she was on the shore. So someone had to have carried her to the shore. He's okay, I know it. Just grieving." Lewis reassures me softly and I sigh.
We keep walking in silence, and we pick off a couple of zombies, then set up a small camp.
I make the fire and Lewis walks around the edge, and then, noise sounds near the side of camp right next to us.
I abandon the fire, grabbing my knife, and I walk to Lewis's side slowly, and we stare, ready to fight.
"Hannah, Lewis. You guys are ok. Thank God." A familiar, yet exhausted, voice says and Martyn steps out of the bush.
"Martyn! Are you okay?" We both say, and I look away for a second, then back at the exhausted looking Martyn in front of us.
I grab his arm and helps him sit down, and sits next to him.
"I couldn't be worse, actually. I find out Zoey likes me, and then she dies. Dies right in my arms, and I couldn't save her. She died because I couldn't save her." Martyn says and pushes his head into his hands, and Lewis looks at me.
"What happened? After we got separated?" Lewis asks gently and Martyn looks up sharply at him.
"We ran, and Zoey jumped into a river, and I followed her. We lost the men, but. There was a waterfall. We couldn't get out of the water in time, and we went over. I was fine except for some scratches and a cut on my arm, but Zoey..." He says and tears are brimming at the edges of his eyes.
"We know, how she died. She had a branch through her stomach. We found her on the bank with mushrooms in her hands, and we buried her. Martyn, where's her necklace?" I say, nearly crying after seeing Zoeys pale, bleeding body again in my mind.
Lewis has tears in his dark eyes also, but I notice something else.
His eyes seem lighter and less serious and... hard, then when I first met him. He's changed.
Martyn reaches into his shirt and pulls out Zoey's necklace, and he says, "She gave it to me, before she died. She told me to come find you guys, and... and to give it to the next person that I loved as much as her. I'll never love anyone as much as I loved her."
We all sit there in silence and before long, Martyn's asleep.
"So, in the morning, we go find a group, get a cure, and then..." Lewis says quietly and I look at him.
"Then what? The world will be in ruins. Nobody has probably had power or technology in months. What will we do? What will happen to the three of us? Martyn's parents are dead, mine are dead, and so are yours. Where will we go?" I whisper and he pulls me close to his chest and I lean my head on his shoulder.
"Nothing. We will stay together, the three of us, and we won't leave each other, for anything. As for where we go, and what happens next, I'm not sure, but we'll think of something, Han. I promise." Lewis says and I drift to sleep.
"Hannah! Get up, but don't go for your weapons." I hear Lewis say and I wake up to see him standing and he helps me up, and I see a lot of people surrounding us, and Martyn stands beside Lewis, his hand clamped firmly on Zoey's necklace.
"Who are you, and why are you here." A man asks and I look at Lewis and Martyn, my blue eyes wide.
"We just were camping here for the night. We were planning on moving on in the morning. Why?" I say as calmly as I can and Lewis keeps his hand on mine.
"Well, you're more than welcome to stay with us. You're young and searching for a cure, no doubt. Well, so are we. We've developed labs that have been trying multiple things to create a cure. We're close, I'm sure of it." The man says and Lewis looks at them with side glances at me and Martyn.
"Well, I guess we could for a little while. We've been doing just fine on our own, by the way." Lewis says and Martyn and I shrug.
"Why not. I guess it makes sense." Martyn says and I nod.
"Let's do it." I say determinedly and we follow the man and his people to their camp, and I almost stop and have a panic attack as I see where their camp is.
"Welcome to Bristol." He says and I grab Lewis's hand tightly and he looks at me.
"Hannah, what's going on?" He asks, concerned and I look back with glazed, teary eyes.
"Bristol is my hometown. This is the place where Kim and Nilesy and my parents died." I whisper and we are ushered down into the city, and Martyn looks like he's about to have a mental breakdown.
Then I realize, he's looking at the necklace.
"Listen, we'll be fine. We will make it through this and we will get our lives back." Lewis whispers to both of us as we are taken into some house.
