THOMAS SHELBY HAD NEVER BEEN AN OVERTLY RELIGIOUS MAN. HE COULDN'T EVEN REMEMBER THE LAST TIME HE had attended a church service of any kind, though he knew his mother, Ada, and Polly went weekly. He didn't see the point in repenting for his sins if he was just going to commit them all over again the next day. It was pointless in his ever calculating mind. Come judgement day he would just hope for the best, though he expected the worst.

He and his brothers had been forced to grow up early, had needed to become men when their sorry excuse for a father started disappearing for days, weeks, months at a time; someone needed to provide for the family he clearly didn't give a damn about. What god would ever allow a man like that to waltz around without the slightest bit of guilt?

Tommy knew Arthur tried his best. Being the oldest of them all the brunt of the burden fell to him, but unlike Tommy, Arthur didn't have much of a mind for business or numbers. The middle Shelby boy helped as much as he could where Arthur wouldn't admit he was lacking without wounding his brothers pride and John was always quick to do anything he could to contribute, wanting to be useful to his brothers and his family.

But looking at Delilah, the almost ethereal beauty that emanated from her in that moment as she laughed loud and carefree, smile close to blinding him with its brilliance, at whatever ridiculous story Freddie was recounting, had him second guessing his beliefs.

He had thought it before, that this girl from Liverpool that had materialized in his life seemingly out of nowhere, had to be some sort of angel. The first time he had ever seen her; she had been storming her way through the streets, cheeks pink with emotion and sapphire eyes glistening with unshed tears. Tommy had been on his way home from the Garrison, having left after Declan and John started mouthing off to a couple of boys for cheating during a card game; he had stayed long enough to help Liam break up the fight but left soon after, when he saw her. She had stomped right past him into the alley way off to the right of him, fine white dress billowing with her movements, fiery red waves whipping around her with her quick steps. He had been rooted to his spot as he turned to watch her go, completely sure in that moment that he was getting a glimpse of heaven and one of its angels.
