C H A P T E R O N E || WHEN HAVE I EVER BEEN THAT LUCKY?
You know that feeling you get when you realise that you have been on top of the world and now you are right down in the dumps? That is what I felt like today.
The way I dressed today could only be called loose. I wore a big baggy jumper and leggings. I put my hair up in a messy bun and I was set to go. I didn't bother with make up or perfume. I didn't have anyone to impress. Not after Connor dumped me anyway. When he asked me out, I really tried because I wanted to feel worthy of his attention. I dressed up and spent time on my hair. Now, I just wanted to get through the day without listening to all the new rumours of our breakup.
I rushed downstairs when I heard a car honk. Grabbing a banana, I raced outside and got into the car. My best friend Lily looked at me with a mixture of worry, amusement and confusion on her face.
"Are we late?" I groaned.
"I think we can make it in time," she replied and began to reverse out of the driveway. We sat in silence until she finally spoke up. "So...how are you?" Her voice was hesitant and soft.
"Fine. Why wouldn't I be?"
"You know why. He was a jerk anyway."
"It doesn't matter. What happened, happened," I replied and we both lapsed into an awkward silence. She parked in an empty slot and we both got out. I slipped a pair of oversized sunglasses on and kept my head down as we walked.
"Teddy, you don't have to do this, ya know," Lily said. "We can leave if you want."
"Nah. I'm fine, really" I tried to smile and convince her but she looked at me doubtfully.
"At least don't wear big sunglasses and oversized jumpers. He cheated on you girl, not the other way around," Lily tried to reason with me but I refused to listen.
"Let's just go in," I said and she reluctantly nodded. I walked towards my locker and started hearing the murmur of whispers around me. I was getting my books when Miranda walked towards me. Wondering who Miranda is? Well let me tell you. Miranda King is the school's queen bee (get it?) King, queen, royalty? Never mind. She is the most popular girl at school and the reason some girls sat in the toilet and ate their lunch. Every single day. I was just glad she left me alone. That is until I started dating Connor. Then, it was like World War 3.
And now, since he dumped me, here she was to gloat. Yay me! I groaned and turned back into my locker, hoping to look as busy as possible but when did I ever get so lucky?
"Oh sweetie, Teddy, you must be so heart broken," she been in her high pitched, over fake voice. "I was too when I heard the news."
"Oh save it Miranda. Go back to your airhead friends," Lily quickly snapped to my defence.
"And what, leave poor Teddy here to wallow on her own?" She smirked.
"I suggest you move before I break that pretty little nose job that daddy paid a thousand for," Lily hissed and I winced at the murderous look on Miranda's face.
"Come on," I tugged on Lily's arm and dragged her away.
"Why did you do that?" Lily glared at me. "I was just about to finally punch that thick little head of hers."
"You know I hate violence!" I exclaimed.
"She was about to walk all over you. Just like the ass Connor did. You gotta stand up for your self!"
"Let's just get to class," I sighed and started slaking towards English with Lily in a tow behind me. She was muttering profanities that even a sailor would blush at. I walked inside the classroom just as Mr Wilson came in. He was that kind of teacher that was fat and balding and always happened to have a drop of sweat on his forehead even in winter. He also had a tendency to spit when he talked so the front rows always remained empty.
I seated my self next to Lily and got out my notebook and favourite pen. Just as Mr Wilson was about to start his lecture on Romeo and Juliet the door flew open and Connor walked in.
"Sorry I'm late sir," he said politely "football practise ran late." Mr Wilson nodded and I noticed that his face was slightly flushed and his hair was mussed. He looked hot.
"He is an asshole. Remember that," Lily hissed in my ear and I dropped my gaze, blushing. I looked from the corner of my eye as he sat down near the back with his jock friends. I shook my head slightly and tuned back into what Mr Wilson was saying.
"-ing to be choosing the partners for this assignment. There are so exchanges allowed. Okay. Kirsty and Jake. Daniel and Holly, Miranda and Trey," I zoned out as he began to read names of his list. "Lily and Norman," I tuned back in when he said Lily's name.
"Yes! I get a smart guy," she indicated a nerdy looking guy sitting a few rows down from us and I rolled my eyes. The poor chap!
"And last but not least, Connor and Teddy," he said and my head jerked up.
What? He cannot be serious.
Everyone moved around in a flurry of activity and I looked towards Connor. He looked just as shocked as me and a little pale as well. Miranda glared at me as I walked towards Mr Wilson.
"I cannot work with Connor sir," I said as politely as possible.
"Why not?" He asked.
"We kinda broke up," I said nervously.
"Oh. So Teddy, let me get this straight? Because you and your boyfriend broke up, you want me to change all my rules just so you both don't have to face the awkwardness of talking to each other?"
"Uhh...yes?" I squeaked out.
"Well Teddy. Let me give you a life lesson. When I was younger and a lot more handsome," Mr Wilson began, running a hand over his bald head "I too had a girl. She was beautiful, but alas, she broke my poor wee heart and do you know what I did?" He asked
"No but-" I began.
"I looked her straight in the eye and said 'I am one of a kind, a peacock in a nest of pigeons'," he said dramatically.
"Did she take you back?" I couldn't care less but I was hoping to butter him up for the trade.
"No. She kinda just walked away," he said sheepishly.
"Oh." Then "So can I change partners?"
"No. Now chop chop," he said waving his hands around 'I have work to do." I turned around and trudged back to my seat. Grabbing my bag and books, I walked over to Connor and plopped my books down.
"Hey," my voice came out nervous and squeaky. He looked up. I felt transfixed to the spot. He was just so beautiful!
"Hey." His quiet reply came back.
Oh, what in the name of talking squirrels and blue unicorns had I gotten my self into?
