I barely had time to process anything before I felt a shift around me. I blinked, suddenly in a colorful room with books all around it, in front of Ambrose. I didn't have any time to think before the professor began speaking.
"Welcome to Wizard city, Rowan! Things here are not normally this hectic. There's a problem on Unicorn Way that absolutely must be dealt with before we can get you enrolled." He spoke urgently.
"I just got done fighting a battle I shouldn't have even been in and now I have to solve one of your other stupid problems?!" I grimaced.
"I have an idea!" I rolled my eyes as he ignored me once again. I knew he could hear me. He proved that when he acknowledged me telling him my name, but now we're back to square one. "Perhaps, if it wouldn't be much trouble, you might take a look? You may be able to help. It will also let you see more of Wizard City."
"I don't care about your dumb problem or stupid city." I mumbled. Ambrose grabbed something from his robe. It was a letter with one of those seals they used in the 18th century.
"Please deliver this letter to Private Stillson at the Unicorn Way Gate. He will let you through." Ambrose gave me a plastic smile.
"Fine." I groaned, taking the letter. I jumped back when large bold letters appeared in front of me: Gained 260 xp. As that faded away, the words Quest: Talk to Private Stillson in the Commons also popped up. I sighed and left the office to go find Private whatever, blinking when a yellow arrow appeared in front of me, pointing to the right. This game comes with a GPS? Cool.
The Commons was a lot bigger than I expected. Buildings lined the streets and a large lake sat in the middle of the town. People wooshed past me. Some on their feet and some on incredibly odd things such as Lions or magic carpets or even a dragon. I jumped out of the way of that person.
I began to run through the town, looking for the guard dude. I was surprised I didn't feel tired from all my running. Usually I quit after 30 seconds.
I finally found him. His name was displayed in green letters above his head. I ran up to him and he began to speak. I'm learning to accept the fact that I'm never going to get to talk first in these types of conversations.
"None shall pass! Unicorn Way is off-limits. There are ghosts everywhere!" He bellowed. Ghosts? I groaned and handed him the letter Ambrose had given me. He didn't even glance at it before saying. "Looks legit. I'll let you pass. Show this to private Connelly in Unicorn Way."
As he said that, the words: Quest completed. 50 xp gained shoved themselves in my face before disappearing.
"If everyone here is as observing as you, this should be easy." I mused. Stillson continued to stare straight ahead, but I could've sworn I saw his eyes narrow a bit.
The gate began to open and the words: Quest: Talk to private Connelly in Unicorn Way appeared in front of me. I walked through. It led to a courtyard surrounded with life and I wondered how any ghosts could be here.
I spotted Connelly immediately and ran up to him. "Ah, a letter from the Headmaster! You're very brave to bring this to me." He said loudly. I rolled my eyes. I hadn't even shown him the letter yet.
"Be careful going farther down Unicorn Way. The street is dangerous. I've seen Wizards like you go down that way and never come back. Beware!" He shouted gravelly.
Quest competed: you have gained 65 xp!
I gulped and then shook my head. It's a game. They're programmed to say things like that. I scoffed and Connelly continued to speak.
"Your arrival is a blessing! We need help tending off the ghosts in Unicorn Way. Some dark forces have risen, and we don't have enough guards to stop them!" He told me. "We would be honored if you would use your powers and chase Lost Souls away for us!"
Quest: defeat 3 lost souls in Unicorn Way!
"Lost souls. Is that what the kids are calling it these days or was the name "ghosts" copyrighted?" I mumbled. Connelly continued to stare at me. I sighed and moved past him, following the path. It wasn't long before I came upon my first Lost Soul. The street was full of them! I bit my lip and nervously approached one. I was immediately drawn into battle.
I felt something in my hand and looked down to see a deck of cards. I frowned, noting it felt much lighter than the last one. I shuffled through them and cried out in anger when I realized I only had two different types of cards. "What a fucking rip-off!" I cursed.
As I mulched over my lack of cards, the soul cast a spell and sent an ice beetle on me. It hit me with full force.
-70 health.
I waved away the words and cast a spell, making the odd sign on the card. A small fairy shot up between us and lifted her arms up, causing something to be sucked out of the ghost. It let out a wail and got sucked into the ground.
I looked down at my hands in shock. One small spell..
I confidently strode up to the next ghost. "Fight me." I spat at it. Before they could make a move, I cast the fairy spell, defeating the soul quickly.
One more I thought giddily. This was turning out to be easier than I thought. As I looked for my next opponent, I ran into a red ball of light.
+70 health
I looked around at the words that were slowly fading in front of me, then around the street, spotting multiple red flowing balls and some blue ones as well. I made a mental note of those things.
I finally found my last opponent. Once again, like the last, I took him out before he could even hit me.
Quest completed: gained 100 xp
Quest: Talk to private Connelly in Unicorn Way.
I shrugged and made my way back to Connelly. "That's turned the tide for us! We'll follow your lead, and get back to work. If only we knew what's causing this spread of the undead."
"...I killed 3 ghosts out of probably 1000." I cocked my head.
"You should Talk to Ceren Nightchant and see if he needs any help!"
Quest completed: gained 0 xp
Quest: Talk to Ceren Nightchant
I went towards where I saw his name in the sky and stopped in front of him. My mouth opened in shock when he turned to me.
Woah, this guy is hot.
